A Unique ‘Christmas Star of Kulshekar’ Created by Dj Kiran Fernandes is a ‘Star Attraction?’
Mangaluru: The Star of Bethlehem – nowadays often just called the Christmas Star – is a major seasonal symbol throughout the world. Imagine, if you will, the silhouettes of three regally attired men on camels called the Three Wise Men. They were gazing across gently rolling hills or dunes of white, to a tiny solitary building in the distance. The night was dark, and one exceedingly bright star appears to hover over the small building, sending a bright shaft of light earthward to illuminate its outline. Another light glows gently inside. That is the picture most of us have of the Christmas Star, but it’s an image derived more from imagination and greeting cards than from the Bible. In fact, the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament is the only place this “star” is mentioned in the Bible. When they had heard the king, the 3-Kings departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
Okay that was a little bit info on Christmas Star. Come December and houses/Institutions get decked up with illuminated paper and plastic stars lending a heavenly feel to the yuletide season. “Get that yellow one,” little Susan tells her father showing the fluorescent yellow star with ornamental cuttings at Jerosa company shop. Indeed, it is hard to resist the temptation to hang one at home. “It is beyond religion. Hanging an illuminated paper star at the entrance enhances the beauty of your home. I put it up every year,” says Ramesh a businessman.
Shops in most parts of the city have stocked Christmas stars. Stars with multicolour flaps and wings and glittering designs are fast moving items. Colours vary from white to bright red and the price depends on the paper, designs and embellishments on them. Prices for these stars have gone up from last year. There are different kinds of stars, from normal five-pointed to 12 pointed ones. There are also stars which have longer tails pointing downwards. Yes, the Christmas star symbolizes hope for good fortune and reaching above oneself. For all human beings, regardless of religion, stars have special meaning for all to share the heavens, no matter what barriers keep them apart on Earth. Christmas is also the season for shop owners like Ullhas Rasquinha, who is selling stars in his shop. Cashing in on the enthusiasm for just a month, he says, is worthwhile.
Now forget about all those fancy and artificial stars that you find in the market- but here is a person by the name Kiran Fernandes, aged 35, who wanted to create a unique star last year, but due to his busy schedule of having full-time job and also late night Dj contracts, he couldn’t make it happen in 2016, but with determination and commitment he has successfully accomplished his dream of creating a STAR which is now a STAT ATTRACTION IN THE KULSHEKAR AREA- how about calling it the “STAR OF KULSHEKAR”, just like the “Star of Bethlehem!
This unique star is five feet in size, and has in the middle a 24 inch LED TV, which displays movie themes pertaining to Christmas all night long till the wee hours, unless Kiran wakes up in the wee hours to pull the plug off, otherwise the the TV will be on till morning. Commuters who pass by Kiran’s house located at “Kiran Cote”, Kalpane-Kulshekar-Mangaluru stop by to have the glimpse of this strange but very meaningful Star. When asked how long it took to create this Star, Kiran said, not many hours, just couple of hours to assemble the star and install the TV inside. When asked what was the total expense incurred, he said around Rs 4000, including the TV which he already owned before. Having posted his creation on Facebook, Kiran has already received quite a number of hits-some even asking him the ideas to make such kind of Star.
When asked if he has any different ideas/plans to create something new next Christmas, Kiran said that at the moment no, but if something unique idea strikes his mind, he will surely try making one next year. Seems like Kiran has become a “Star” by creating this unique “Star”- there is nothing wrong with it – so if anyone of our readers have come up with an extraordinary Star or planning to make one send in your details, and we will also make you a “Star” through Mangalorean.com for your “Star” originality!
