A Vijayanagar Inscription Discovered at Baradakallu Bole in Kadali-Udupi Dist
Udupi: At Baradakallu Bole in Kadali, near Mahalingeshwara temple of Iduru-Kunjadi Village in Kundapura taluk of the Udupi district, a Vijayanagar inscription was discovered by Prof. T. Murugeshi ( Associate Professor, Ancient History & Archaeology, MSRS College, Shirva) says in his press note emailed to Mangalorean.com
The inscription under study belongs to the Sangama dynasty of the Vijayanagar Empire and issued by Bukka I. it records the epithets of Bukka II in glowing terms and during his tenure his Prime Minister Goparasa Odeya was said to be ruling Barakuru Rajya as a governor. It records the date in Saka year 1290, Kilaka Samvat, which corresponding to 1368 A.D. This date is supported by other records of Goparasa Odeya who was governing the Barakuru in between 1366 A.D. to 1373 A.D.
Historical Significance of the Record:
Kolluru is a great centre of Shakta Cult and celebrated centre of Shakti worship in India. The epigraph under study records the seize of Kolluru Fort. It was said that Hanneredu (twelve) Yakkala (tenents) baliyavaru, Nada Nalvaru,(four officials of Nadu) and Senabova (a Village Official) Tippa laid seize to the fort of Kolluru and in that event a soldier named Kadada Mutta died in the fighting. To support the cause of deceased a kind of Manya (grant) was given by Goparasa Odeya the governor of Barakuru Rajya. At the end of the record the place of record Kadali mentioned as Kaduvali and in local dialect it has become Kadali.
The record doesn’t say anything about cause of seize, results of seize and against whom it was fought. But, fortunately an inscription from Uppunda mentions an independent king Katarasa ,an associate of the king Kolarasa and an official Anna Senabova who were ruling in and around Kolluru as contemporaries to Vijayangar in 1377 A.D. Later in 1480 A.D. Kolluru came under the control of Vijayanagar.
