Addressing the media persons, Dr Anand Venugopal, Medical Superintendent, KMC Hospitals said, “Much emphasis must be laid on recognizing the stroke symptoms and seeking appropriate centre with facilities of multidisciplinary approach to treat the condition – this is very important because the golden hour is wherein the patient can get full functional recovery. Once the patient is got to the centre and treated by the Stroke team the next crucial part is the post-treatment rehabilitation of the patient by the expertise of a Neuro-Physiotherapist. In this context, it is imperative that the patient is treated in a holistic Hospital with a multi-disciplinary approach to manage stroke like at KMC Hospital Ambedkar Circle Mangaluru.”
Also speaking during the press meet, Dr. Z K Misri, Head of Dept & Consultant Neurology-KMC Hospitals, Mangaluru said, “Stroke also commonly known as brain attack is caused by decreased blood circulation to the brain and it can be present in different ways – it maybe facial deviation, arm/ leg weakness speaking abnormal speech. Any of such signs a patient should rush to a stroke centre immediately.”
Dr Shivananada Pai, Consultant Neurology, KMC Hospitals, Mangaluru stated “Ischaemic strokes are caused by a blockage cutting off the blood supply to the brain. This can cause damage to brain cells. Hemorrhagic strokes are caused when a blood vessel bursts within or on the surface of the brain and are generally more severe when compared to ischaemic strokes. Treating a Stroke patient is like fixing a Formula Race Car by a bunch of mechanics when it breaks down, and put it right back on the race time within no time- similarly is the case when treating a stroke patient”
Speaking on the occasion Dr.Keerthi Raj, Assistant Professor Dept of Radiology & Interventional Neuro Radiologist, KMC Hospitals Mangaluru said, “KMC Hospital Mangaluru has state of the art facilities to handle any type of emergency stroke cases. Typically in a stroke patient, the large vessel blocks supply to brain, this can be diagnosed by carotid Doppler, CT angiogram and then proceed with carotid stenting or intracranial vessel stenting and open the blocked vessel. If an intracranial large vessel is blocked then we retrieve clot using stent-retriever devices and open the blocked vessel and limit the area of damaged brain to restore blood flow to brain.”
Dr.Mayur Kamath V, Consultant Neurosurgeon, KMC Hospitals said, “The team of Neurosurgeons, Anesthetics and Post Op care at KMC Hospital have been performing complex hemorrhagic ischemic stroke cases successfully. The team is geared to handle the most of the complex cases and retrieve the patient from permanent disability.”
Dr.Jeedhu Radhakrishnan- Consultant Emergency Department, KMC Hospitals Mangaluru stated, “Managing a Stroke patient is a team approach, goal of stroke care is to minimize acute brain injury and maximize patient recovery time. Time is the main essence to recovery; there is a Golden period within which a stroke patient needs to undergo the required treatment. Stroke Protocol followed at the Emergency Department involves urgent evaluation, stabilization & initiation of treatment of stroke victim within One hour of arrival to the hospital.”
