Udupi: Burning of plastic waste is leading to diseases in the city said CMC Councilor Vasanthi Shetty. She was speaking during the CMC meeting held at the Sathyamurthy Auditorium, Udupi here on April 28.

People are burning plastic waste leading to environmental pollution, the City Municipal Council should restrain people from burning plastic waste in the city. A official said that the deputy commissioner has instructed the police at the district border check posts to seize plastic materials, which include plastic bags in particular. By-laws have been formulated for imposing fine on plastic bags, the by-laws have been sent to the State government for approval. In addition to legal measures, plastic collection centers are needed to be setup for the collection of excess plastic possessed by the public. The deputy commissioner has also instructed the Pollution Control Board to seize a firm in Koteshwar producing plastic bags. CMC President Meenakshi Madhav Bannaje said that stern action will be taken against those who throw plastic materials from moving bus. A paper notification on waste management will be published to give information on the segregation of waste.

CMC Commissioner Manjunathayya said that flex materials will be banned in the city and those involved in printing plastic flex materials will be asked to print on cloth sheets.

CMC Councilor Yasphal Suvarna said that many dogs are found dead after sterilization. An official in replay said that effective measures are followed while sterilizing dogs. Members said that officials should effectively inform the members while any projects are initiated at their wards, Commissioner said that the information will be effectively conveyed to the Councilors.

CMC Vice President Sandhya Tilak Raj, Opposition leader M.R Pai and others were present.
