Aditi scripts history in golf

Gurugram,(DHNS):  Aditi Ashok created history on Sunday by clinching the Hero Women’s Indian Open golf title at the Delhi Golf and Country Club.

The 18-year-old from Bengaluru became the first Indian to win the home event and also the first Indian to win a title on the Ladies European Tour.

The youngster fought back spectacularly after dropping a shot on the 17th hole to wrap up the final round with a birdie. She edged past Spain’s Belen Mozo and USA’s Brittany Lincicome by one stroke to earn a pay cheque of $60,000.

The Bengalurean, seen as the brightest talent in Indian women’s golf, is in the midst of a spectacular year where she competed in the Olympic Games, besides notching up four straight top-ten finishes. With this victory, she has also become the leader in the race for the Rookie of the Year award, with two events more to go at Qatar and Dubai next month.

The teenager first played in the Indian Open as a 13-year-old amateur in 2011 and the following year, she was tied eighth, which was her best till the latest success.  She turned professional this year after a highly successful amateur career.

In her last year as an amateur she won six titles. Her calm and focused approach to the game winning her many admirers. “I guess it will sink in in a few hours or when I reach home. I’ve had a lot of good finishes at the Indian Open and to finally get the job done, feels good, especially as an Indian player in front of my home crowd. It means a lot to win this,” said Aditi.

Making it a memorable day for Indian golf, S S P Chawrasia emerged winner in the men’s Asian Tour, topping in the USD One million Resorts World Manila Masters in Philippines.
It was his first Asian Tour title outside India.
