Aditya Prakash, student of Centre For Advanced Learning brings glory to Mangaluru for being the FIRST student in Karnataka state selected in INMO (Indian National Mathematics Olympiad)

Mangaluru: Addressing the media persons during a press meet held at Mangalore Press Club, Severine Rosario- Programme Coordinator-CFAL said, “It is a matter of great pride for Mangaluru that a student has been selected to the prestigious third stage of the Mathematics Olympiads program. Aditya Prakash, a student at Centre for Advanced Learning (CFAL) is the ONLY student selected from Karnataka and is one among the only 38 students selected from the country. The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the largest, oldest and most prestigious mathematics Olympiad for students. While many private entities conduct different Olympiads, there is only ONE Olympiad that is recognized by the Government and which is internationally recognized (Like the Olympics for sport)”.

She further said, “Aditya is the son of Prathima and Om Prakash Barnval and is the only candidate selected from Karnataka. He is eligible to attend a four-week Orientation cum Selection camp (OCSC) in the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education and Research in Mumbai from where the international team gets selected. Based on aggregate scores in OCSC, 6 students will represent India at the International Olympiads. The International Olympiads in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Astronomy and Junior Science is an annual event, which is held in June/ July every year. The country hosting the IMO for different subjects varies from year to year. This year, the 58th International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO 2017) will be held in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil.”

Aditya being a student at CFAL Mangaluru, is where the focus of learning is not on marks, but in developing passion and excellence in STEM subjects. Students of CFAL consistently attain best results in the region- in the recent National Talent Search Examination (NTSE- 2016-17, state level), ALL selections were CFAL students! In 2014, CFAL student Sumith (Physics and Chemistry) and in 2013, CFAL student Sunil Simha (Astronomy) were among the only 35 students in the country to reach the prestigious third stage and had an opportunity to attend the orientation cum selection camp at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science education, Mumbai.

The history of IMO dates back to 1959 when the first edition was held in Romania with seven countries participating: Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, and USSR. Since then, the event has been held every year (except 1980) in a different country. Currently, more than 100 countries from 5 continents participate. Each country can send a team of up to six secondary students or individuals who have not entered University or the equivalent, as of the date of celebration of the Olympiad, plus one team leader, one deputy leader, and observers if desired.
