- Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare, GMU announces launch of “MedSim Olympics”, the first ever Simulation Olympics in the region.
Ajman: Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare – Gulf Medical University one of the leading simulation-based training centers in the region, will be organizing the 1st Annual Conference on Clinical Skills and Simulation in Medical Education on the 9th of April 2015. A distinguished group of internationally renowned faculty in this field have been selected to deliver the talks at the conference.
The latest facilities and services at the center are available for use by various institutions, organizations and companies to benefit from the regular high-quality training programmes and courses that are offered on a regular basis, said Prof. Manda Venkatramana, Director of the Center and Dean College of Medicine, Gulf Medical University. The conference, which will have keynote addresses from international experts, will reiterate the importance of incorporating simulation in medical education to foster a new generation of health-care professionals who will be better equipped to deliver safe and high quality care.
International experts like Prof. Tim Kristensen, University of Copenhagen, Prof. Robert O’Brien, University of Melbourne, Prof Guillaume Alinier, University of Hertfordshire UK, Carrie Hamilton, University Hospital Southampton NHSFoundation Trust and Prof. Manda Venkatramana, Director, Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare and Dean College of Medicine, GMU will deliver keynote lectures at the conference. The conference is accredited by the Ministry of Health UAE for 5.5 CME Hrs.
External Advisory Board: The Founder President Board of Governors GMU Thumbay Moideen has announced the formation of an External Advisory Board for the center. International experts have been invited to be on board and the first meeting will be chaired by the Provost of GMU Prof. Gita Ashok Raj on 9th April 2015, he mentioned.
The center has conducted about 100 training sessions and trained almost 1500 multidisciplinary health-care professionals since its opening in January 2014.
Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare is a member of various International Simulation associations and organizations like Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine (SESAM), Denmark, Australian Society for Simulation in Healthcare (ASSH), Association of standardized patient education (ASPE), Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), Canadian Network for Simulation in Healthcare(CNSH), and Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH) United Kingdom.
MED SIM OLYMPICS, THE FIRST EVER SIMULATION OLYMPICS IN THE REGION
The Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare – Gulf Medical University is launching the MedSim Olympics. This championship is being held for the first time in the region and we are delighted to invite teams from various colleges and universities and hospitals in the UAE, said Prof. Manda. We want to expand the participation to teams from other GCC countries from the next edition of Simulation Olympics 2016, he added.
MEDSIM OLYMPICS is a championship contest where inter-professional healthcare teams will encounter simulation-based patient management challenges giving them an opportunity to competently display their crisis resource management skills effectively. This year’s theme is Life Support. The teams consist of Physicians, nurses, resident and an Intern or a medical student. The winning team will be honored as the MEDSIM CHAMPIONS of the year. The theme for MedSim Olympics 2016 will be Pediatrics and Gynecology.
Explaining the rules Prof. Manda gave the following details:
MEDSIM OLYMPICS is a championship contest where inter-professional healthcare teams will encounter simulation-based patient management challenges giving them an opportunity to competently display their crisis resource management skills effectively.
2015 THEME: Life Support
TEAMS: The required number of participants in a Team shall be not more than 6. Each team shall consist of:
– Not more than 3 Physicians from different specialties with valid AHA-BLS & AHA-ACLS license
– Rest of the team members can include other Healthcare Professionals with valid AHA-BLS / AHA-ACLS license (preferable)
RULES AND REGULATIONS:
– The composition of each Team must meet the specifications mentioned above
– Teams will be expected to manage a ‘simulation based –scenario ‘of about 20 minutes duration
– Teams shall be assessed on their Technical and Non-Technical skills
– Teams should pass the semifinal round to qualify for the final round
– Only 3 Teams shall be selected to compete in the final round
– A judging panel comprising of international experts shall observe and mark each Team’s performance during the final round using a standard check-list
– The winning team will be honored as the MEDSIM CHAMPIONS of the year
– The decision of the Judging Panel shall be final and binding.
