Akshara Santa Harekala Hajabba Chosen for Padma Shri Award 2020
Mangaluru: Harekala Hajabba a humble fruit-vendor hailing from the outskirts of Mangaluru, who brought a revolution in rural education selling oranges has yet another feather in his cap. He has been chosen for the Padma Shri award 2020.
Padma Shri (also Padma Shree) is the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan.
It is awarded by the Government of India, every year on the Republic Day of India. The government of India has announced the list of the Padma Shri awardees.
Harekala Hajabba wanted the children of his village to have education, which he himself was deprived of in his childhood. With this aim in mind, he spent all the money which he earned from selling oranges for the project of a school, now it has grown into a huge tree. He is popularly known as Akshara Santa (Saint of the letters) in Dakshina Kannada.
Great News. This man deserves all the recognition for his work and dedication. We need more Hajabbas in our society.
