‘All Roads Lead to St Aloysius’ Students Raise Voices during Protest March

Mangaluru: St Aloysius Institutions staged a protest against the Mangaluru City Corporation for not taking the Aloysius authorities into confidence before agreeing to rename the ‘St Aloysius College Rd’ to “Mulky Sundararama Shetty Road”, at the college premises here on July 1.

Addressing the students Principal of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) Fr Praveen Martis Sj said, “Today is a historic moment for all of us at St Aloysius College. Once a Aloysian always a Aloysian,. is a saying, and we should keep it that way. St Aloysius Road will always be St Aloysius College Road. We are deeply hurt by the way they are snatching this road away . This is the 137-year-old great Institution, it is a heritage institution with a famous chapel. In this institution, there are students from KG to Post Graduation. Today when injustice is done to us, we are all pained. Let us all join together to demand justice. We will all maintain peace throughout the protest. We respect Mulky Sundararam Shetty’s contribution but from the past 137 years, the name has been engraved on this road. Let us protest peacefully”.

Chief Whip Ivan D’Souza speaking on the occasion said, “The priests at St Aloysius are giving you education. When we were studying in this college, the road was called as St Aloysius Road and this institution has a history of 137 years. St Aloysius is a great institution and if you go to any part of the world you will find SAC students. We are one family and it is our duty to fight for justice. Being the old student of this great institution, I will work hard to retain the St Aloysius road name. There is no compromise in this matter. “

Speaking on the occasion St Aloysius Rector Fr Dionysius Vaz SJ said, “I am very happy that we have gathered here as one family. It is not just a road but it is the respect due to our institution. We want the city to give us that respect for giving our service to the city. They say all roads lead to St Aloysius. I would like to thank all the organisations that have come forward and supported us in this cause.”

Fr Dionysius Vaz SJ further said “I would like to bring communal harmony in this city because this city is known for communal disharmony. When you go to protest as Aloysians you will maintain discipline and not disrespect anyone. You need to show all what St Aloysius is for, and that we all here are fighting for justice, values and harmony. Please continue the campaign until we get justice.”

President of St Aloysius College Students Council Aman Ahmed declared the protest march open. Students marched in a procession from the College campus through Jyothi Circle – Hampankatta and culminated at the college campus.
