All’s Well that Ends Well! World’s Best Nurses of Fr Muller’s Conclude ‘Nurses’ Week’
All’s Well that Ends Well! World’s Best Nurses of Fr Muller’s Hospital Conclude ‘Nurses’ Week 2018′ and also celebrate “International Nurses’ Day’
Mangaluru: All’s Well that Ends Well!-That’s right. Quoting Shakespeare’s words, “But with the word the time will bring on summer, When briers shall have leaves as well as thorns, All’s well that ends well; still the fine’s the crown; Whatever the course, the end is the renown “- the Nurses Week that was launched a week ago, ended with a Blast on the valedictory Ceremony held at the Academy Hall on Friday, 11 May 2018. International Nurses Day which is held every year on 12 May, was celebrated a day earlier here, due to the Assembly election. And this year the Theme of Intl Nurses Day is- “Nurses: A voice to lead – Health is a Human Right”
Being at various programmes connected with Nurses Week/Nurses Day at various institutions, including Father Muller Hospital and interacting with sea of nurses, I have been seeing “Angels’ of Mercy in my dreams recently? On the outset Team Mangalorean would like to wish all the Nurses, who are fondly known as “Angels of Mercy” a Happy International Nurses’ Day. And truly, all these Nurses have taken up a real good professional and good earning career- and for that matter, both my Sister-in-Laws, for the last 40 plus years had worked at reputed hospitals in Chicago Suburbs-USA as senior staff nurses, earning good salary- and they owe their achievements for the Nursing education that they received at Fr Muller Nursing School/College then. Yes, they are the product of this renowned institution, and they still feel proud and pay respect to their Alma mater- Fr Mullers!
Yes, no doubt that Nurses are the hospitality of the hospital. Nurses lead very demanding lives. Working with doctors, healing patients and educating the communities are just a few of the responsibilities nurses perform on a daily basis. In fact you could say that nurses are the backbone of our healthcare care system, providing us with the attention and medical care that we need to live health long-lasting lives. Sometimes being a nurse can be exhausting at times, but the knowledge and power to help heal others is what keeps them going in challenging times. And while nurses are strong spirited, positive and focused even they need a little pick me up every once in a while – like complimenting them for their well-done job or appreciating their dedication and commitment to patients and health-care.
And one Charitable Catholic Institution in the “Rome of the East” Mangaluru which has and is producing the best and the professionals in the field of Nursing to serve locally, Nationally and Internationally, is none other than Fr Muller Nursing Institution- and there is no doubt about it. Quoting the beginning lyrics from the Fr Muller Institution Anthem : “We Come to Comfort and to Heal, to Love and Serve in Woe and Weal “- these words truly fit and describe the prospective nurses and staff/registered nurses of this great Institution, who had launched the beginning of “Nurses Week 2018” on 7 May, and concluding it on 11 May. The programme began with invoking God’s blessings through a dance, followed by welcome address by Fr Rudolph Ravi D’sa- Administrator, Father Muller Medical College Hospital.
The programme began with garlanding the portraits of Augustus Muller-the Founder of Fr Muller Hospital, and also of Florence Nightingale- the Founder of Modern Nursing by chief guest Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D’souza- Bishop of Mangaluru Diocese, along with other dignitaries on the dais namely- Fr Richard Coelho-Director, Fr Muller Charitable Institutions; Fr Rudolph R D’sa; Sr Jacintha D’souza- Principal, Fr Muller College of Nursing; and Sr Janet D’souza- Chief Nursing Officer. During the occasion, a pioneer in the nursing field, ‘Angel of Mercy’ Sr Loredana Korah, was Honored by Fr Muller Hospital-Mangaluru on this International Nurses Day- the honor was done by the Bishop. Prizes ware distributed to the winners in the various contests held during the Nurses Week 2018.
Addressing the gathering Fr Richard Coelho said, ” While wishing all the Nurses of Fr Muller Hospital a Happy Nurses Day, I also want to congratulate and compliment you on three reasons – 1} Your profession is one of the largest group in the world; 2} Nurses trained and got education at Father Muller’s are the BEST NURSES ACROSS THE WORLD; 3} Our Nurses are rendering the best services in the hospital, than other hospitals across the nation. So you should be proud of your status. And you could do that only through the blessings of God and Augustus Muller. During the morning Mass today, we had offered prayers to all our nurses so that you take good care of the patients, show them love and empathy. Let me once again compliment you all for being very dedicated, compassionate, loving and caring towards the sick. We all love you, respect and will will support you”
In His presidential address, Bishop Rev Aloysius D’souza said, ” Best wishes to you all on Nurses Day. I am happy to say that this is our Hospital, and you are our dear nurses, where your service is very much appreciated by all of us. Even though Fr Richard had complimented you all on three points, let me add one more, that is, because of your dedicated service people love to come to our hospital. This is not just my observance, but I have heard from many people. Even though I had a busy schedule today, I came here just to appreciate all the good work and service you render. That’s the reason our hospital is full all the time. Now I don’t want the doctors to feel bad that I am praising the nurses a lot- but they should know that nurses are always besides them while going for hospital rounds or during treating patients. Nurses your role in healing ministry is very important. Keep these three things in -Profession, Vocation and Mission. You all have taken your nursing career with profession and mission. Serve the patients with broad smile, with love, be compassionate, courteous and caring. May God bless you all”
Prior to the formal function, a Eucharistic mass was held at St Joseph’s Chapel at the Hospital this morning, where Fr Richard Coelho concelebrated the mass along with Fr Rudolph D’sa, Fr Ajith Menezes and Fr Felix, the Chaplain. The vote of thanks was delivered by Sr Janet D’souza, and the programme was compered by Ms Neesha Noronha and Ms Pramila Quadros. The formal programme ended with cultural entertainment comprising of dance, song and mime show. The events during the Nurses Week 2018 were The nurses were divided into Five Groups and were names after the renowned persons in the medical field: HIPPOCRATES, PASTUER, TESLA, CELSIUS, MENDEL. Games were organized on 25th, 28th and 30th April 2018 and 2nd May 2018. A test on Hospital Policies related to NABH was conducted for all nurses on 3rd, 4th and 5th May 2018. Panel Discussion on the Theme of the International Nurses Day 2018 was conducted on 7th, 8th and 9th May 2018.
In conclusion, quoting Florence Nightingale, “Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter’s or sculptor’s work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God’s spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts”. Long Live the Nurses- the Angels of Mercy!
