Alva’s Holds ‘Keraleeyam’ Annual Tribute to Culture and Tradition of Kerala

Moodbidri: Alva’s Keraleeyam, an annual tribute to the culture and tradition of Kerala, held with pomp and gaiety at Alva’s Nudisiri Vedhike on Tuesday, February 13.

The event took off with the procession of beautiful damsels decked in the trademark Kerela saree with lamps in their hands, walking to the catchy beats of the Chende to welcome the esteemed dignitaries to the extravaganza. The procession featured Daffmutt and Vattapattu and the well known and well loved entertaining act of Pulikali. The tradition of Kerala Thiruvathiri was displayed in front of the dignitaries on the dais. The iconic flower carpet ‘Pookalam’ adorned the floor.

The prizes of Alva’s Keraleeyam Games were given away to deserving students of Alva’s Education Foundation.

After the formal function, the cultural program featured ‘Oppana’, a celebration during the Mehandi program in the bride’s house. This is a happy send-off for the daughter as she leaves her home and steps into the world of wedded bliss and ‘Vattapattu’ which depicted the festivities in the groom’s side.

Other familiar art forms included Mohiniattam, Poorakali, Margamkali, Kalaripayatu, Vanjipata, Folk dance and songs. The highlight of the evening was the traditional beat of Shingarimelam with Chende as the percussion, led by a team of girls and boys.

Appreciating the celebration of Keraleeyam in Alva’s campus, Annie Libu, Global Vice Chairperson, World Malayalam Federation, said ‘Keraleeyam is a symbol of love towards Kerala’. She mentioned selfless submission is the key to success.

The taste buds were treated with authentic flavours of typical Kerala food such as Avial, Rice, Sambhar, Pachadi, Kootu curry, Pulinji and to satisfy the sweet tooth there were two types of Palada Prathaman.

Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr M Mohan Alva, Trustee Vivek Alva, Former Minister Amarnath Shetty were present among others.
