Mangaluru : American Physicians of Indian-Origin (AAPI) President Dr Suresh Reddy, applauding the hundreds of thousands of Indian-origin medical personnel bravely fighting against the virus, said that “Every 7th doctor in the USA is an Indian and they are at the frontlines, working as soldiers and fighting the virus. The entire medical fraternity has become the Army right now, fighting the coronavirus,”. Many Doctors and health care personnel, including nurses of Indian origin serving in different countries have received salute from the public for their dedicated and committed role played during the pandemic. And here we have our son of the soil, young Shreyas Shet, studying in Brisbane, Australia, who for his ‘Selfless Work’ during the Covid-19 pandemic has received compliments from David Andrew Warner-the Australian international cricketer and a former captain of the Australian national team.

Australia opening batsman Warner has lauded the efforts of an Shreyas studying in Queensland/Brisbane, Australia for his ‘selfless work’ during the COVID-19 pandemic. Shreyas Shet, hailing from Mangaluru, and who is presently pursuing Masters in Computer Science at the University of Queensland-Brisbane has been a part of an outreach program that is delivering food to students in need amid the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. He is the son of Rtn Santhosh Shet- the Past President of Rotary Club of Mangalore; currently the Zonal u -2 District 3181; and manages a construction company named ‘Arathi Construction Company’; and Er (Mrs) Arathi Shet, who is an engineer at Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA). Shreyas younger brother Sourabh is stepping into IInd year BDS at A B Shetty Dental College, Mangaluru.

Shreyas had done his High School/PUC at Kendriya Vidyalaya -Panambur, Mangaluru, and after completing his engineering in Computer Science at st Joseph’s Engineering College, Vamanjoor-Mangaluru in the year 2017-18, he moved to Australia for higher studies, where he is doing his Masters in Computer Science. During his days in Mangaluru, Shreays was actively involved in various social service projects, helping out in programmes organized by Rotary Club of Mangalore, and showed lots of interests in other community activities. Among other hobbies, his main interest was in creative art work and ideas.

Speaking to Team Mangalorean over the phone from Brisbane about his involvement in the Covid-19 community service, Shreyas said, “With UQ we’ve been doing a few things such as providing hardship hampers every week, buying groceries, packing them, and the student either pick these up or we drive and deliver them to the homes. It actually started out as support for those students who came to Australia during the peak time of coronavirus and were confined to their homes. Due to self-isolation, and since they couldn’t go out, we would deliver food and groceries. This went on to open up to any student who needs the hamper. We’ve also been providing fresh-frozen meals weekly in partnership with foodbank and study Brisbane”.

“I’m also part of Slice of Life which is an initiative under UQ Life online. There are events, food recipes, art and other fun stuff to do so that you are active at home. As part of UQ union international department I’m helping international students with support and information and updates on things such as financial help, accommodation, visa and connecting them with other people and local communities which provide food, groceries and services for international students ” added Shreyas.

Recognizing the efforts put in by young Shreyas Shet helping the student community during this pandemic, Australian cricketer David Warner said in the video tweeted by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, saying, ” “Good Day, Namaste. I am here to thank Shreyas Shet for selfless work during COVID-19. Shreyas is doing his Masters in Computer Science in University of Queensland. He is part of University’s outreach program preparing and delivering food packets to students in need right now. So, I just wanted to say, good on ya, I am sure your mom, dad and India is proud of you. Keep up the great work, because we are all in this together,”.


Speaking about his Son being a Good Samaritan in Australia, the proud father Rtn Santhosh shet said, “Words can express how much myself, my wife and my younger son are proud and overwhelmed on the selfless work that Shreays is doing in a foreign country. He has carried on his social service activities which he was doing here in Mangaluru, and now to the town in Australia. The applauds that was showered on him by Australian cricketer for his selfless efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the news came to us in the form of a gift, during our 25th Wedding Anniversary couple of days ago. We pray that God shower his blessings on Shreyas, so that he continues his social service towards the community”. Ms Sharon Verghese- Indian Student studying Nursing in Australia

In yet another video uploaded on tweeter account, Adam Craig Gilchrist AM -the Australian cricket commentator and former international cricketer and captain of the Australia national cricket team had thanked a Kerala student nurse studying in Australia for her efforts during the pandemic. In a video uploaded Gilchrist had said. “Hi. I am Adam Gilchrist. I was delighted to hear about the act of kindness by Sharon Vergese, an Indian student, studying in Australia. Sharon is a student of University of Wollongong and during the Covid-19 pandemic, she gave up her time to act as an age-care worker”.

“Sharon I wanted to say congratulations on your selfless act and wanting to thank people of Australia because you have enjoyed three and a half years living here, that’s wonderful to hear. All of Australia, all of India and more importantly, your family will be so very proud of your efforts. Congratulations, thank you and please keep it up, we are all in this together.” added Gilchrist. Later, Sharon Varghese told an online portal that she was really bowled over by the legendary wicket keeper and batsman’s congratulatory note. She said her father was a big cricket fan and these words made him really proud.

Sharon, who came to Australia in 2016, hails from Kottayam in Central Kerala. Her friends said after completing nursing graduation from the University of Wollongong she has been working at an aged care home there. The United Nurses Association (UNA) has also appreciated the work done by Sharon, adding that out of 20 lakh registered nurses at least 15 lakh are from Kerala.
