‘Angel of Mercy’ Nimmi Stephen gets ‘State Best Nurse Award’ for her Bravery in Saving a Life
Mangaluru : No doubt that Nurses are called as “Angels of Mercy” for their care and service to the suffering patients, but many a times they also go out of their way helping victims stuck in tragedy, accidents and other grave situations- and here we have a young nurse of 22-years Nimmi Stephen Kulakkattu,a origin of Payyavoor in Kannur district, Kerala, who had proved her bravery in saving a young girl’s life while she was repeatedly being stabbed by her boyfriend. And this brave act has fetched Nimmi the prestigious State-level Florence Nightingale Award, which was presented to her at a ceremony in Bengaluru during the weekend. In recognition of her bravery, she also received an award from the Hospital where she is employed.
These Awards are given to Nurses for their exemplary service to humanity and Nimmi truly deserves this award since she carried out a deed of bravery with an effort to save human life involving personal risk. She certainly fits that criteria. While looking at the video of the incident which took place a month ago, we can see Nimmi’s quick action after getting down from the ambulance and rushing to save the girl from getting stabbed more from the young man- and while a bunch of onlookers nearby were just clicking photos and videotaping, Nimmi did what she had to to save a human life, even though she had to risk her own life-her action of service was outstanding. We need Nurses like Nimmi in a health care sector, and not just those who pay money and get a seat, and even pay more money to get a degree.
The 22-year-old nurse, Nimmi Stephen speaking to media had said that she never imagined she would be honoured with the prestigious award so early in her career. “I was just doing my duty and was not thinking of anything except saving the girl on that fateful day last month. I was always interested in serving people.
More than getting this Award, I am happy to note the injured young girl is recovering. I had visited her couple of times, and her doctor introduced us formally. I still remember her saying, ‘thank you’ the day I came to her rescue,” said Nimmi. .
Nimmy Stephen , a staff nurse at a private Medical College Hospital, at Derlakatte Mangaluru and it is learnt that she had completed her nursing education at the same institution. On getting hired for a job at the hospital, Nimmi speaking to media had said “I always dreamed of being a nurse and consider myself lucky that the institution hired me soon after my education. It’s been 11 months since I started working here as a nurse,”. Sources reveal that Nimmi hailing from an agriculturist family, her father-Stephen Kulakkattu, is a farmer, while her mother-Thankamma, is a homemaker- and she has two brothers.
Recalling the incident which took place on 28 June 2019, a 27-year-old youth stabbed a girl at Bagambila, Deralakatte and later slashed his throat. Sushanth (27), from Shaktinagar stabbed 20-year-old student Diksha at the above mentioned place. After stabbing Diksha, Sushanth tried to cut his own throat in an attempt to commit suicide. When the local people tried to stop him from attacking the girl, he menacingly flashed his knife and kept them at bay. It was when Nimmy who arrived in the Hospital ambulance to the scene, and saw 27-year-old Sushanth drenched in blood, she began convincing to him to step away from the victim, who had already been stabbed multiple times- and her attempts helped. Diksha from Deralakatte is an MBA student studying in Udupi. It is suspected to be a case of failed love. The victim meanwhile has been shifted out of the Intensive Care Unit and is recovering..
In conclusion, Nimmi Stephen without a doubt displayed courage and compassion when, without concern for her own safety, she went to assist the victim when she was getting stabbed and also injured. We definitely need more such Nurses like Nimmi, and not just those for namesake being called as “NURSE”?
