Mangaluru: “Hope I’ll Get Hired today?”- anticipating that thought in mind, Saturday, April 7th morning saw hundreds of young and old job seekers throng Padua College campus for the “Padua Job Fair 2018”, and started their hunt for the companies related to their stream. Padua College of Commerce and Management, in association with Padua College Alumni Association (PCAA) and JCI Mangalore -Lalbagh had organizing the 2nd Annual “Padua Job Fair – 2018” this morning at Padua College premises from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. The purpose of this event was to connect the various companies or employers with potential employees, especially the outgoing students. The main intention of the organizers was to present the participants to the many employment opportunities available to them, both locally and nationally- and also provide an opportunity for the present and past students of Padua College, along with the other unemployed youth and adults to get a job.

Recalling last year’s Job Fair statistics, the candidates who registered were 1242 out of whom 362 were shortlisted and 113 were employed. This year already by 11 am, nearly 200 participants had already registered their names- and organizers were anticipating more job seekers until 5 pm deadline. The eligibility for the registration was SSLC, PUC, ITI, Diploma, Management and Professional courses-with no registration fee. The candidates had to bring the copies of their resume, marks cards, experience certificates and other related documents, when they appeared for the interview with the job recruiters.

The inauguration of “Padua Job Fair 2018” was done by lighting the traditional lamp Fr Wilfred Prakash D’souza-Director, St Joseph Engineering College-Mangaluru, along with chief guest-JCI Sen Krishnamohan-Past Zonal President and JCI India Author; and guests of honor on the dais namely MLA J R Lobo; Fr Antony Shera- Correspondent, Padua Educational Institutions; Fr Alwin Serrao- Principal, Padua College of Commerce and Management; Roshan Vincy Santhumayor-Vice-Principal /Job Fair Convenor; Ms Soujnaya Hegde-President, JCI Mangalore-Lalbagh; Deenath D’sa-Job Fair Cooordinator and Placement Officer; and Alex Stewart- President of PCAA.

Addressing the gathering MLA J R Lobo said, ” The first thing I am going to ask you-Is there unemployment in India? {And a loud answer came from the audience saying- YES?}. Unemployment exists all over the world, and even in India, and also in Mangaluru. It’s nice to see many of you youngsters come here for the job fair Today is a unique opportunity to form partnerships between potential employers and employees. Entering work life after completed studies is a two-way process. As job seekers, you need to make yourselves attractive to employers. But companies have to make an equal effort to attract the best students/youth/adults. Students today ask their potential employers: What can you offer? Can I fulfill my potential within your company? Can you live up to my dream?”

“These days finding a job suiting your qualification is very hard. I have seen M Sc Graduates employed in IT call centres. This is waste of their knowledge they gained during their academic. When you take up a job make sure that you will like the job and whether you are capable of doing it. Also make sure the work place is enjoyable to work, and not a boring one. Taking up a job is not important, but whether you qualify for it is important. I started my government job with mere Rs 700 salary, but I didn’t quit-bit I was very much determined with my career, and continued with my post. Yes, India is growing, so also Mangaluru, with more companies coming up, creating more jobs. But think twice before you agree to take up the job. And once you are hired, stay with the company, don’t quit at once due to minor issues. Work things out, and success will prevail” added MLA Lobo.

Also speaking on the occasion, Fr Antony Shera said, ” These days finding a good job has become hard for job seekers. No matter what kind of job offer you get, you should take it up, and in the meantime start looking for better employment offers elsewhere. But don’t quit as soon as you join a new company, it will put a bad remark on your job history. One gets job based on the merit and professional competency. A person hailing from poor background too can get good job through his/her effort. Indian students have a lot of scope abroad, but try to remain in your country or city, for its growth. You represent the real value, the most precious resource in India today. The success factor for India many years ahead is young, educated people that are prepared to take positions that form building bricks in a sustainable future. Businesses today have to be brave. When looking for the right people, they must dare pursuing one of the most precious competitive advantages in our global world: Highly educated people with multicultural competence as part of their own background.”

The welcome address was delivered by Fr Alwin Serrao, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Ms Soujanya Hegde. Prashanth D’costa, lecturer at Padua College compered the programme.
