I asked Equal Rights for All Religions never insulted the Constitution – Pejawar Swamiji
Udupi: After the protest by the students and progressive association against Pejawar Math’s Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji over the “insulting remarks against the Constitution of India” by calling it “incorrect” and “biased”, on Monday November 27 Pejawar Swamiji clarified and said, “I never insulted the Constitution of the country during my speech at the Dharma Sansad in Udupi. Some people have misinterpreted my statement and are protesting against me”.
Swamiji further said, “The Intellectuals think I am anti-Dalit whereas I am not and I have never said Dalits should not get the reservation. I said reservation should also be given to all Hindus and not only to the minority community. There will be discrimination between the minority and Majority religions. The government is providing all facilities to the people of minority community which is wrong. In a secular country, governments should treat the people of all faiths and religions equally. If the government gives common facilities to people of all the faiths and religions equally then the Dalit institutions will also get the same facilities. At the same time, I have never asked to withdraw the facilities that are given to Muslims and Christians. But some students and activists have misinterpreted my comments”.
Swamiji further said, “I did not call for making changes in the Constitution and that my comments had been misinterpreted. I only asked the government to make amendments to the constitution to give reservation to all Hindus. I have the highest respect for the Constitution. I have not insulted the Constitution and Dr B R Ambedkar. The government should treat all people equally and that is my wish”.
Pejawar Swamiji also questioned the Karnataka chief minister, “If he respects Basavanna and his preachings, he should immediately implement the ban on cow slaughter in the state.”
What is the problem in questioning the constitution? It’s not god’s revelation like some other “scriptures”. It’s written by mere mortals. Let there be common sense. I am with Pejavar on this one. The thing is we have shot ourselves in the foot by keeping everything related to the nation off-limits/sacred, be it constitution, national anthem, judiciary etc. So now the chickens are coming home to roost.
