On October 20, Mohammed Shanawaz had assaulted the college Principal when he was coming out from the chamber. The principal, Fr Michael Santhumayor was admitted to Fr Muller Hospital after he was assaulted by the student.
President and members of Catholic Sabha met the Bunder police inspector Shantharam Kundar on 25 October and congratulated him for the swift action in arresting the accused.
Speaking to Mangalorean.com Catholic Sabha president Anil Lobo said, “I congratulate the Police Inspector of Bunder Station Shantharam Kundar for arresting the student. At present, in schools, if the teaching or management staff and heads of institutions are assaulted, there is no law to punish the wrong doers. The principal of the Milagres college was assaulted by a student while he was coming out from his chamber. Where is the safety for the staff in schools and colleges? The student who has been arrested has been sent to Judicial custody till November 7, but his parents will try to get him out on bail. Such cases should be booked under nonbailable sections. This should be a lesson to those who take the law into their hands”.
Anil Lobo further said, “The government should implement strict laws in schools. According to the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act, there is a provision to penalize the teachers if they are found guilty but there is no such act if students assault any of the staff”, he said.
Nigel Pereira, Godwin Pinto and Steevan Rodrigues were also present.
