Association stages Protest against Compulsory Introduction of Speed Governors for Old Taxis and Maxi Cabs
The protesters took out a rally from the Tiger Circle to the RTO office and shouted slogans against the state government.
Addressing the gathering Udupi district Taximen’s and Maxi Cab Association president Raghupathi Bhat said that there are more than 14 companies which are manufacturing speed governors. The government is sadly dependent on only two companies for providing speed governors. The move by the government raises suspicion. The transport department has allowed only two companies to install speed governors. “This has led to exorbitant charges and will also lead to the monopoly of two companies.
The actual price of the speed governor is Rs 3,000, but the government is charging Rs 16,000 for the same. He demanded that the government should also make it compulsory for private vehicles to introduce speed governors and not make it mandatory only for tourist taxis and Maxi cabs.
The Kerala Government issued a circular that vehicles coming from Karnataka will have to pay higher road tax when compared with vehicles coming from other states. This hampers tourism and logistics business and both the governments should resolve the issue, he added.
After the protest, the protesters demanded the RTO to come and receive the memorandum. After two hours the RTO met the protesters and received the memorandum.
