Awareness Programme on Substance Abuse, Anti-Ragging and Cyber Crime Laws held for Sahyadri College First-Year Engineering Students
Mangaluru: Department of Academics and NSS division of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management in collaboration with The District Police Department organized a much-needed awareness talk for the First year engineering students on issues like Substance Abuse, Anti-Ragging, and Cyber Crime Laws.
K. Rama Rao, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mangalore South Sub-Division and Bhajantri, Inspector, Mangalore Rural Police Station addressed students about the evils of Substance abuse, Ragging, and Cyber Crime. Emphasizing on substance abuse problem, in his speech, Rama Rao shared his experiences relating to the cases he handled relating to drugs and revealed that 90 % of the time the people involved in such cases are students. He explained the Acts such as NDPA and various Indian Penal Codes applicable for the crimes relating to drug abuse and ragging. He stressed the role of students and teachers in curbing the menace of substance abuse, ragging, and Cyber Crimes. He also explained the various types of substances that are abused and its physical and psychological impact on the students.
Talking about the cyber crimes, he explained about CDR (Call Details Records) and how mobile phones can be used to solve the crime and track the culprits. He said that Drugs weaken the society and those involved in it are doing a crime against the society.
Bhajantri spoke about the effects of a substance on the individuals’ mind and body. He made the students understand their purpose of coming to college and how they must choose to lead their life. Dr Rajesha, Dean- Academics explained the mechanism established in the college to curb substance abuse, ragging and Cyber Crime. He spoke about the college Anti-ragging committee and squad. He urged the students to report to the committee if any incidents of ragging that may happen to them or their friends.
Dr Srinivas Rao Kunte, Principal, in his presidential remarks, urged the students to unite against the evils of Substance abuse, Anti-Ragging, and Cybercrimes. Devadas Hegde, Trustee, Bhandary Foundation graced the programme as the guest of honor. Shreelatha U. A Academic Administrative Officer and NSS coordinator coordinated the programme. Calida Royce D’Souza, Asst. Professor in English hosted the program and Rasmitha Girish Nishal, Student Welfare Officer delivered the vote of thanks.
It’s an ideal contribution on the part of Sahyadri College to come up with various gatherings and focus on the importance of avoiding the substance abuse and all other consequences that come out of it that can endanger the entire society.
