Awareness Rally & Street Play on Child Abuse and Human Trafficking held in City
- On Sunday, 27 October 2019, the NGOs of Mangaluru namely Childline 1098-DK; Jeevandhara Kulshekar, Sahodaya Bethany, Mangalore Cycling Club, Aloysius Boys Home, Federation of Environment protection, Oasis Bengaluru, KGVS DK organized the Cycle and Bike Rally and the students of Infant Marys Hostel/students of sacred Heart School-Kulshekar performed a street play called “Arivu”, bringing awareness on Children’s Rights and protection.
Mangaluru: Human trafficking is an issue that touches the very core of our society and can impact us in more ways than we know. Victims of human trafficking suffer from unspeakable conditions and horrors and are treated in a manner that no human should ever experience. It is only through raising awareness and raising our voices together against this atrocity that change can ever be made. A bunch of NGO’s and educational institutions took the initiative to raise awareness regarding human trafficking, Child Abuse and other forms of abuse, in order to prevent this blight from continuing to spread. Through raising awareness we can prevent innocent people from becoming victims and can also bring hope, light, and rescue to those that have been victimized.
These days we are also noticing Trafficking of girls which has become quite prevalent throughout India and the world, and millions of girls are traded every year. It is learnt that in India, more than 20,000 children are forced into domestic violence, flesh trade and forced marriage. So rallies and awareness programmes like these is going to provoke voices and throw light on infusing unity among the youth. Human Trafficking is the recruitment or movement of persons, through threat or force, deception or coercion for the purpose of exploitation.
People are tricked into situations where they are bought, sold, abused, and exploited in many different ways: sexual exploitation, forced labour, street crime, domestic servitude or even the sale of organs and human sacrifice. Trafficking affects every continent and every country. Traffickers and their victims often come from the same place, speak the same language or have the same ethnic background as their victims. Such commonalities help traffickers generate trust to carry out the crime.
So in order to bring awareness on Child abuse and Human Trafficking, on Sunday, 27 October 2019, a bevy of NGOs namely 1098-Childline DK, Jeevandhara Kulshekar, Sahodaya Bethany, Mangalore Cycling Club, Aloysius Boys Home, Federation of Environment protection, Oasis Bengaluru, KGVS DK organized the Cycle and Bike Rally and the students of Infant Marys Hostel’/Sacred Heart School- Kulshekar, Mangaluru performed the street play called “Arivu”, bringing awareness on Children’s Rights and protection. The Street play was held at the entrance gate of DC’s office, followed by yet another performance at KSRTC Bus Stand-Bejai, Mangaluru.
NGO Oasis from Benagaluru, with a vision for community where everyone is included making a contribution and reaching their God-given potential; and with a Mission, to work in an inclusive, integrated, empowering and comprehensive way so that all people experience wholeness and fullness of life, a group of youngsters traveled all the way from Bengaluru, some riding motorcycles, others took bus or car, and a total of 44 of them landed in Mangaluru, where they demonstrated a street play on awareness of Child abuse and Human Trafficking, at Mangalore Central Railway station, and one more near Lady Goshen Hospital/across from Town Hall, where a large crowd witnessed their play.
Arumugam K M, the Assistant Manager (Administration & Operations-National) Oasis India- Bengaluru speaking to Team Mangalorean said, “Human Trafficking is the recruitment or movement of persons, through threat or force, deception or coercion for the purpose of exploitation. Such commonalities help traffickers generate trust to carry out the crime. And why they do it, People are trafficked primarily for financial gain. Human trafficking is a multi-billion dollar industry – it is a high-profit, low-risk crime, with 3287 new victims every day, which is 136 per hour”.
But citizens can help stop human trafficking and save lives if they know how to spot signs. A person could be a victim of trafficking if he/she- is nervous or paranoid; avoids eye contact; appears malnourished; is not allowed to speak for themselves; shows signs of physical or sexual abuse, physical restraint; and has few or no personal possessions.
And if you recognize a few of these signs in any person around you, share what you’ve seen with the relevant authorities.
