Bantwal Areas Sealed Down following Woman’s Death due to COVID-19- Many Placed Under Quarantine

Vicinity in Bantwal Sealed Down following 50-year-old Woman’s Death due to COVID-19 today, 19 April, which happens to be the FIRST calamity from Coronavirus. Due to this, the District Administration has ordered home quarantine of woman’s husband and son, and about 15 family members and relatives. Even the doctors who treated the woman have been put under quarantine. The woman worked at a Bank and is also a member of the Rotary Club, Bantwal. Probably there are chances, bank customers who had come in contact with her, may also be placed under quarantine- but not yet.

Mangaluru: While the district was about to get some relaxation on the lockdown from 21 April midnight onwards, but unfortunately, due to the sudden death of a 50-year-old woman from Kasaba, Bantwal, at the Govt Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru this morning (Sunday, 19 April) has put the district/Mangaluru under the same strict lockdown procedures, until further notice. And the administration has also sealed down the surrounding vicinity of Kasaba, Bantwal where the woman resided.

Sources reveal that the woman had developed respiratory problems on Saturday, 18 April, and she was treated at the Bantwal Taluk hospital- but as the symptoms increased she was brought to the Govt Wenlock Hospital, which is the ONLY authorized hospital to treat COVID-19 patients. After collecting her swabs and sent for testing, and even before the test results were in (suppose to come in by Sunday noon), she breathed her last late Sunday morning. The swab reports which came in late afternoon showed positive results, confirming she had contracted COVID-19. Her final rites will be handled by the district authorities as per the Govt COVID-19 guidelines.

It is learnt that the woman’s son had come down from Dubai on 16 March, and that information was not released to the dist administration until now. After the death of the woman, her husband and her son have been put under home quarantine, including nearly 15 close family members. It is learnt that the woman’s mother-in-law is in critical condition in the ICU at Wenlock hospital. The samples of the family members/relatives have been collected and sent for testing.

Following the woman’s death, the District Administration quickly sealed down the area surrounding the woman’s residence, for a radius of 3 km, also including the main Bantwal town vicinity. Authorities are keeping a close watch on these areas, and doing the screening procedures. Apart from the woman’s family members, the doctor of a private clinic, who had treated her a few days ago, has also been placed under quarantine. Also, those persons who have been in contact with the woman, including her neighbours are under quarantine.

The Administration is also checking into the travel history of the woman. All these people have been transported to Mangaluru to be quarantined, escorted by a team of health officials and under security. It is learnt that other places which have been declared as COVID-19 contaminated zones are- Janata colony in Karaya of Belthangady, an apartment in Thokkottu, Sajipanadu and Thumbay in Bantwal Tq, Ajjavara in Sullia, Mane in Puttur, and Uppinangady in Puttur.

Here is a detailed report as of today as posted by MLA Vedavyas Kamath- One tested positive in Dakshina Kannada (DK) for coronavirus on Friday, April 17. Three more who were completely cured of coronavirus were discharged today. The three discharged persons are a 63-year-old woman who came from Dubai, and two men aged 43 and 52, who had attended the Delhi Tablighi Jamaat event. The lone patient who tested positive today is a 39-year-old man from Uppinangady who had come from Delhi. He had been quarantined for 14 days on April 1. His first test conducted on April 2 proved to be negative. During the tests on the second sample sent on April 13, the result showed that he has coronavirus infection. He happens to be the 13th patient of the district.

As per statistics, in Dakshina Kannada, a total of 39,080 persons have been screened so far, out of them, 588 are currently under home quarantine. No patient has been quarantined in the Wenlock hospital, while 10 have been quarantined in ESI hospital. Fifteen were discharged from ESI hospital today. As many as 5,485 persons have completed 28 days of home quarantine, with no symptoms reported. Out of the 714 samples sent so far, 700 have tested negative, and a total of 13 tested positive, out of which one is currently active, and 12 have been discharged. On Friday, reports of 90 samples were received, all of which were negative. Another 32 samples have been sent to the lab in Wenlock hospital on Friday. A report of one sample is awaited. Twenty-eight people are currently admitted for observation.
