Mangaluru: With the new Education policy bringing focus on developing core skills in India’s youth, Industrial Training Institutions play a vital role catering to rural youth who can be pivotal problem solvers for over 136 crore Indians. Recognizing that ITIs can be models of innovation and entrepreneurship, providing safety nets and critical skills to the youth, Skills for Progress and St. Aloysius ITI in partnership with SELCO Foundation have been working with 25 such rural youth focused ITIs in the country. This program provides a platform for the youth to become innovators, future entrepreneurs using sustainable energy as a catalyst, helping India to reach its SDG goals by 2030.
ITI education plays a key role in fulfilling manpower needs in the technical field in India as well as in the world. With the Government’s vision of developing India as the global technical manpower hub, ITI education has come into the limelight and the door of opportunities has opened up for Industrial training Institutes. There is a need for ITIs to upgrade themselves to match the current times to better harness the opportunities available and thus contribute to nation building by training the in various skills. youth. Regarding St Aloysius I.T.I, it was established in 1981 to mark the Centenary Jubilee of St Aloysius Institutions. It was founded with the vision of uplifting the poor and lower caste of the society economically by empowering them with the technical skills needed for the industries. Run by the Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society (MJES), it has been a ray of hope to the underprivileged. Being a unit of St Aloysius Institutions, it is well known for the quality of training imparted by highly knowledgeable and professionally trained staff. The institution is permanently affiliated to National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT), New Delhi, Government of India.
In the past years, St Aloysius ITI already has fully established collaboration ventures with industries, like:
– Collaboration with M/S Hyundai Motors: Under this venture, along with the regular classes, MMV students are provided training in service and repairs of Hyundai vehicles. Exams are conducted to assess the progress and on successful completion of the training, students are recruited at Hence, we try to collaborate with industries.Hyundai dealerships.
– Collaboration with M/S TATA Motors: It is a separate specially designed course, under which students undergo initial phase of training at our institution and then at the latter phase (9 months), work at the TATA dealership and get hands on job experience.

Regarding Skills for Progress (SKIP), it was established 50 years ago, the founders of this organisation were visionierens, who have recognized the need for skill training way back in the era of Indian industrialization. SKIP has been a catalyst in contributing to the development of young students, Drop out, underprivileged and tribal youths for over five decades now. And SKIP has been closely associated with SAITI, in conducting many projects in the past.
The launching programme of ‘Smart Solar Lab’ was graced by Capt Ganesk Karnik, the Ex-MLC of Karnataka, joined by Dr F Joseph Stanley the General Secretary of SKIP; Suhas Shenoy- Electrical Engineer/Technical Coordinator, Global Hub, SELCO Programme; Fr Cyril D’mello-Director of SAITI; Roshan D’souza- Principal, SAITI; Manjunath Rao-Faculty at SAITI, and convener; and presided over by Fr Melwin Pinto Sj-the Rector of St Aloysius Institutions. The formal programme began with a prayer, followed by a welcome address by Fr Cyril D’Mello, where he said that the main objective of St. Aloysius Institutions is “ We prepare men and women for others”, hence our technicians who after training at SAITI should work for the progress of the society. In his inaugural address Capt Ganesh Karnik said, “I am really overwhelmed at SAITI for running successfully all these years and providing the best facilities to its students, unlike other ITI’s that I have come across. I have even invited the Deputy Commissioner to visit this facility, who has readily agreed. Frankly speaking, all you students have made the right choice in joining the ITI course, with an intention for better prospects. You need to become a good technician, and not just a technician, and you should also be a good human being”.
“A technician passed out from ITI has better scopes in getting a job in mega companies, than those with engineering degrees. Do you know that the person who did his ITI course, is now the GM of the Volvo Company. ITI can rekindle your creation into success. Above all, I love this Samipya hall, which is unique and cozy, never seen at many other ITI institutions in the State. The world is waiting for fresh technicians, who are in vast demand. Student responsibility occurs when students take an active role in their learning by recognizing they are accountable for their academic success. Student responsibility is demonstrated when students make choices and take actions which lead them toward their educational goals. You all have made the right choice joining ITI, which has a better future for you all” added Capt Karnik.
Dr Joseph Stanley speaking on the occasion said, “The vision of SKIP is to be an agent of change that will foster a just and fair society – more specifically to empower the socially and economically poor and marginalized communities; and its Mission is To develop and propagate vocational and entrepreneurial skills and income generating activities, to enhance the capacities of member Institutions. SKIP acts as a means of sustainable livelihoods for poor and marginalized groups, with special focus on women, for the development of the community.as a coordinating body for providing technical assistance , networking and other services to private charitable institutions, irrespective of caste, creed and religion, and to develop innovative and appropriate technologies. SKIP is happy to be associated St Aloysius ITI, one of the best ITI’s that SKIP has come across”

When you go out of this ITI, be an asset to the world, and unleash your technical talents learnt here. Show the world not as just a technician but a good technician. Be dedicated and committed to your work, and success will be yours. SELCO is doing a yeomen service to the society, and we should appreciate their kind gesture, and support to SAITI. My humble request to you all students, when you go home spread the good words of this institution and the facilities and training it provides to your friends and neighbours, so that they too will be motivated and convinced to join our Aloysian family”
