‘Beat the Plastic Pollution’! Sahyadri College takes part in ‘World Environmental Day’

Mangaluru: India has been chosen as the global host for world Environment day -2018. In this regard Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Govt. of India, has a plan to undertake the cleaning of beaches and river stretches in the country under the tagline of “Beat Plastic Pollution”. College of Fisheries, Mangaluru in collaboration with, District Administration, Dakshina Kannada and Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management initiated a week-long Beach cleaning programme was launched on 1.6.2018, at Panambur beach. Different line departments of Environment and Ecology, Department of Fisheries and students of College of Fisheries, Sahyadri Engineering college, NGOs and the general public actively participated in the beach cleaning programme, a stretch of 3.0 km of the beach was cleaned.

Nearly two truckloads of plastic garbage was picked up from the beach and disposed of with the help of City Corporation. Dr S.M. Shivaprakash Dean, College of Fisheries, Mangaluru inaugurated and addressed the volunteers, he explained about the cleanness of the beaches and the negative impact of plastic on marine life. Dr S.R. Someshakar Professor, Dr Lakshmipathi M.T. Associate Professor, College of Fisheries, Mangalore were the coordinators of the programme. Dr Dinesh Kumar, Regional Director Environment, Utthappa S, Ministry of Environment, Mahesh Kumar Deputy Director Fisheries, Dr Srinivas Rao K. Principal Sahyadri college of Engineering and Management. Shreelatha U A, Academic Administrative Officer, Yateesh Bikampady, coordinator Beach Management Committee, officials from various school and colleges, Industrial staffs, Press and Media persons were present and lend their hands in cleaning the beach.

Saturday 2nd June 2018 at Thannir Bhavi Beach.

Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Govt. of India, in collaboration with College of Fisheries, Mangaluru, District Administration, Dakshina Kannada and Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management initiated a week-long Beach cleaning programme which continued on 2 June 2018, at the Thannir Bavi beach. Different line departments of Environment and Ecology, Department of Fisheries and students of College of Fisheries, Sahyadri Engineering College, Aided Vidhya Dayeeni high school, Surathkal, Koloor high school Mangalore and Bertrand Russell high school, Bikampady participated actively in the beach cleaning programme.

Sahyadri College is ideally located in such a way that they can easily conduct their own courses on a regular basis on Environmental issues that relate to Mangalore as a growing City. Sahyadri is located ideally at a lovely river front where we can do extensive research on preserving our river front by keeping a close watch on the daily activity of the area and save the river from any kind of unwanted pollution.
