The MLBA launched in the year 2014 with a motto “Promote, Protect, Practice and Propagate – To unite the girls and providing them with opportunities to exhibit their skills; Providing a platform for the girls to showcase their abilities; To strive for the upliftment of those involved in the trade without any monetary benefits; To organize training programmes and workshops to beauticians to develop their skills; and striving for the well being of women and girls”, has now grown top strong membership of 250 plus ladies beautician covering Mangaluru, Puttur, Sullia, Moodabidri, BC Road, and Surathkal.
The atmosphere had a glittering and extravagant look with all these women dressed to thrill, and most of them looking gorgeous in their colourful Sarees/Salwar Kameez/other outfits in different colours and designs. United Colors of Beauticians! “How should I look today. What should I wear today – it’s a million dollar question where one would ask oneself while getting ready for a show or an event. This quest for trends, looks, fashion-be it clothes, shoes, jewellery or beauty for that matter. There are some shows you look forward to, for an entire experience to look rich and beautiful. For this, beauty counts- it’s a phase when beautician or a make-up artist show their creativity and expertise on a model or even on a simple person to that matter. Because “beauty” lies in the eyes of the beholder” – with that thought-provoking introduction to a glittering and glamorous Annual Day Celebration of MLBA, the comperes of the function, Nithesh Shetty and Miss Apoorva professionally moved on with the proceedings of the evening.
The function began with invoking God’s blessings rendered through a prayer song by followed by a welcome Bharathanatyam dance by two damsels, where they performed in the true local tradition and culture. Mercy Veena D’Souza-Vice President of MLBA welcomed the gathering, followed by the elaborate history and Annual report of the Association delivered by Ramya P D- the secretary of MLBA. The Celebration was inaugurated by lighting the traditional lamp by Chief Guest- Bhasker K Moily- MCC Mayor, along with other dignitaries, namely- Santhosh Kumar Hegde- President, Mulki Bunts Sangha; Capt Brijesh Chowta- General Secretary, BJP-DK; Ms Jessy Serrao, a entrepreneur from DK now settled in France; Ms Jayashree A Shetty -Past President, Inner Wheel Club-Moodbidri; Ms Myna S Shetty- Secretary, Sri Devi Education Trust; joined by MLBA board members- Ms Babitha U Shetty (President); Meena D’souza (V P); Ramya P D ( Secretary); Padma (Jt Secretary), and Priya Y S ( Treasurer).
With all these eminent persons as dignitaries from Bunt Community, and with all the bunch of felicitations done to the achievers from the Bunt Community, followed by bunch of speeches in Tulu from these dignitaries, I was a little bit confused whether it was a Tulu Sammelana organized by Bunts Association, or whether it was really an MLBA Annual Day celebration?- oh well, that was only on the lighter side of vein! Anyways, all these dignitaries for the inaugural and closing ceremony of the annual day celebration, including a bevy of Tulu cine stars, were all great people and entertained the audience with their presence/speeches. Tulunadu Ki Jai!
On the occasion, Ms Myna S Shetty was felicitated by Mayor Bhasker K, and in her speech, she said, “I love what these ladies are doing as part of their profession- but in my entire life I have never been to a beauty parlour to make me look good (laughs). But no doubt, a beautician can transform your lifestyle and looks. A great beautician can help a person create an entirely new look through changing hair style and colour, make-up, and other procedures. People rely on their beautician to help them look as attractive and fashionable as possible. The most successful beauticians share certain qualities that give them an edge in the industry, including Adaptability, Color and Style Perception, Creativity, Skilled at Customer Service, Good Grooming Habits, Adept with Several Techniques, Ability to Visualize Ideas and so on. And I am sure with all these qualified and professional members in MLBA, they surely can make a difference. Best of luck to all of them”.
Mayor Bhasker addressing the gathering said ” I feel happy to be here at this programmer of a unique association, who are not only taking care of their customers in their beauty needs but are also doing many community services. Associations are always essential to chalk out plans, arrange programmes and projects, solve problems and so on. While being in an association, members have to work together in unity for the success of the association. As mentioned in their motto, it is nice to note that MLBA is offering free training to poor women who are eager to join in the beautician trade. The members of MLBA are doing a yeomen work in this respect, and I wish them all success in their future endeavours”.
Capt Brijesh Chowta, Santhosh Kumar Hegde, Ms Jessy Serrao and Ms Jayashree Shetty also spoke and commended the service to the community done by MLBA and wished them all success in their fifth year. Following the vote of thanks by Priya Y S of the formal inaugural ceremony, there was a variety of cultural programme, ranging from songs, dances and skit. After lunch, there was a fashion show, where the ladies of MLBA all dressed to thrill, walked the ramp in their gorgeous looks, and were judged by the guests of honour comprising of Tulu Cine Stars, namely-Arjun Kapikad, Miss Aradhya Shetty and Anoop Sagar, who also promoted their upcoming Tulu movie- “Yer Uller Ge?”.
The valedictory function held at 5 pm on the same day was graced by Chief guest Jaya Shetty of Mayuri Foundation, Mumbai, along with other dignitaries namely- Ms Veena Shetty- Manager (CSR) MRPL, Mangaluru; Mrs Eugine- Proprietor-Lady Look Parlour, Moodbidri; Ms Swaroop N Shetty-Dell Computer Education Centre-Mangaluru- and on the occasion, Ms Bhavan Pergade- the State Janapada Academy Puraskar was honoured. Ravi Poojary, Prashanth Poojary and team from Mumbai who are in the fashion show business also graced the occasion. Yogish Shetty, president of Tulunadu Rakshana Vedike also graced the programme.
Chief guest Jaya Shetty said, “An urgency or common need prompts people to work together to pursue goals and interests. Whatever the impetus, the decisions made by the founder/board members during the start-up period will have a profound impact on the success, effectiveness, and longevity of the new organization. Quite simply, associations are people-groups of people who find strength in numbers while sharing common interests of industries, professions, charities, hobbies, or philanthropic action. A great beautician is able to share a vision with his or her client for an end result. They are able to clearly visualize the goal and skillfully perform the work required to reach that goal. I am confident that MLBA will reach greater heights and cater to the needs of their clients and community”.
Mementoes were presented to the dignitaries on the dais, sponsors and to the kids who performed song/dance during the occasion. Priya YS of MLBA rendered the vote of thanks. Speaking to Team Mangalorean Sony D’leema-the past founder president of MLBA said, ” Many beauticians who are unskilled and lack knowledge about the trade have been carrying out beautician work at the homes of the customers. The main objective of the association was to stop such practice by creating awareness about the trade in those girls and train them to be better beauticians. The association had aimed to create awareness in them about the ill effect of such practices. By doing so the association has united the women entrepreneurs owning beauty parlours and salons in and around Mangaluru”.
“Further, the association had worked towards obtaining government recognition to the beautician business and thereby provide healthy and hygienic beauty parlours even in the villages. From a small number when we started this association, we are now 250 plus strong. Our main objective is to provide a better quality of life, and create awareness about health and hygiene in our girls and thereby improve the beauty. The members of the Association firmly believe and think that after four years of our launch and hard work, MLBA has come into being to fulfill its objectives and motto. We need the support and encouragement from the public to continue in our efforts and endeavours,” added Sony.
In conclusion, the essence of a beauty parlour is like a “dream Merchant”- they sell the dream girl desired of looking good, feeling good and being on the top of the world. Like any other dream, it seems to be a reality. smiling face, friendly approach, catering to the needs of every customer gives them the satisfaction. A true practitioner in the art of beauty is a testament that she still cares for the customers and moves beyond the business relationships. The memories between the beautician and customer should last for a lifetime. These likeminded beauty parlour owners have joined together to fulfill their motto and showcase their unity, by establishing this Association with an objective to unite the beauty parlour owners in and around Mangaluru to achieve their motto and solve our problems. Long Live MLBA!
