Beedi Workers demand Payment of Dearness Allowance

Udupi: “Beedi companies should pay the pending dearness allowance of the Beedi workers which is pending from the past 2 years to comply with the High Court order”, said CITU leader Vittal Shetty. He was speaking at a protest organised by CITU demanding Beedi companies to pay the dearness allowance as per the high court order here on March 20.

The government of Karnataka has fixed Rs 12.75 for 1000 Beedis depending on the price increase variance. The Beedi companies without following the order of the then labour minister Parameshwar Naik have not paid the dearness allowance to the Beedi workers. Following the order, the Beedi Workers filed a litigation in the High Court of Karnataka to scrap the order.

The High Court of Karnataka in the month of November has scrapped the order. The Beedi Federation had given a notice to the companies to pay the pending dearness allowance from April 2015 but the Beedi companies have failed to pay the allowance to the Beedi workers.

“The pending dearness allowance to the Beedi workers should be immediately released if not protests will be intensified”, said Vittal Shetty.

Mahabala Vadarahobali, Umesh Kunder, K Lakshman, Vishwanath Shetty, Pushpa and others were present.
