Beltangady: The case of death of Bhagyashree, a student of a college in Moodbidri, who died in a mystery fire at home in Marodi Kukrabettu in the taluk, appeared to be taking a new turn with the tracing of a death note written by her before dying.
While it initially seemed to be a case of suicide, some circumstantial evidence like the locking of the main door from outside, fire damage only to the attic while the lower portion of the house had remained unaffected and the like were clearly hinting at an outside hand.
The parents, already in distress over having lost their daughter and being haunted by the dark memories, are no longer staying in the house. They are being sheltered by some relatives and acquaintances. The mother has been almost in a state of daze and is being treated in a hospital for the last ten days.
Relatives have alleged that the police have not followed up the case properly. Except for taking away the books belonging to Bhagyashree, they had not looked for any other clues for ten days. Many days later, all of a sudden, a death note which is believed to have been written by her, has been traced in the house on Thursday.
The letter claims that Shivappa, a local man and a distant relative, had come to outrage her modesty. If at all she happened to die, he would be responsible for it, the letter says. It also contains a fervent appeal to the parents to secure justice for her.
The police took him into custody on Wednesday and let him off after initial interrogation. After finding the death note, he was again again and interrogated.
The police said that the note had been sent for a laboratory analysis and a report was expected in about five days. The report of the post-mortem examination was yet to be received, they said.
