Bengaluru: The traffic police of the Garden City won thousands of hearts again by ensuring safe and rapid transport of a live heart harvested from a patient here for transplantation in Hyderabad on Saturday, Feb 28.
Pandit Shivaray Bhagi (30) had been severely injured in a road mishap near the Electronic City on Friday. He was declared brain-dead and his parents graciously consented to donate his heart to a needy person in Hyderabad.
The doctors at the Victoria hospital decided to harvest his heart and airlift it from the HAL airport. They sought the assistance of the traffic police for a green corridor for an ambulance. For the first time, surgeons at a government hospital handled the operation.
A special aircraft was kept ready at the HAL airport to take off at 11-40 am on Saturday. The green corridor was facilitated by stopping all the traffic along the way. With signal-free access available, the heart reached the HAL airport within a few minutes.
A report from Hyderabad said that within two minutes of the aircraft landing at the Begumpet airport, the heart was taken to Yashoda hospital. The surgery is said to have taken about five hours and it was successful. The beneficiary is said to be a woman.
Victoria hospital sources said that the family has consented to donate Bhagi’s eyes and kidneys too to needy patients.
For the traffic police here, it was yet another feather in the cap. On two earlier occasions in 2014, live hearts were airflown to Chennai by creating green corridor to ensure early airlifting. In January 2015, another heart was harvested in M S Ramaiah hospital and transplanted in the BGS hospital.
The Bhagi family, the doctors at both the hospitals, the traffic police in both cities and the airport personnel all deserve a ‘hearty’ word of appreciation. Their efforts have touched everyone’s hearts.
