Bengaluru: Sonia Narang, an IPS officer of Karnataka cadre currently serving as SP Lokayukta, is being promoted to the rank of deputy inspector general of police (DIG) effective Dec 31, 2015.
She was in the limelight recently when she pursued a complaint of a government official against extortion calls and related corruption in the same institution. In spite of false allegations against and veiled threats to her, she went ahead with her job which led to the arrest of top officials of the institution, besides Ashwin, the son of Lokayukta Y Bhaskar Rao himself.
Matters came to a head with the resignation of Justice Bhaskar Rao himself a few days. ago. Narang’s promotion marks the end of her 11-month tenure with the Lokayukta.
But her bold steps against corruption will always be remembered in the corridors of the institution, said an insider. If it was not for her determined action, the rot inside would never have come out in the open, said the sources.
Hailing from Chandigarh, Sonia was brilliant in studies. Besides being a north zone topper in XII standard, she won a gold medal in BA (Hons) from Punjab University. She secured the Punjab University Merit Scholarship and national scholarship from the HRD ministry for three years. She also holds a Master’s degree in Sociology secured through distance education.
She is married to Ganesh Kumar, also an IPS officer but assigned to Bihar cadre, whom she had met during training. Maybe the bold streak in her motivated her to choose the name ‘Shaurya’ (bravery) for their son. their only issue.
