Bengaluru: Dr H Nagesh Prabhu, IFS, Member Secretary & CEO of Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, and Government of India has assumed the charge of Secretary General of International Sericultural Commission (ISC) on 1st January, 2016.

Dr H Nagesh Prabhu Member Secretary Central Silk Board

Dr Prabhu was elected as Secretary General in the Governing Council of ISC held at Mumbai, India on 25th July, 2015. Dr. Prabhu succeeds Ishita Roy, who had completed her term of 3 years.

International Sericultural Commission, instituted on 8th August, 1960, is the only inter-governmental organisation engaged in the development of sericulture and silk industry in the world. The ISC, which was Head Quartered at Lyon, France was shifted to Bengaluru, India during 2013 consequent upon the election of Indian nominee for the post of Secretary General. After shifting its HQs to India, the ISC has taken up many innovative programmes to promote sericulture like Training, Scholarship Programmes, Volunteer Expert Programmes, Sharing of Genetic Materials, Collaborative Research Programmes among R&D institutes, etc. These initiatives have significantly benefited in enhancing the productivity and quality of silk.

Dr H Nagesh Prabhu as an IFS officer has more than 31 years of experience of working in various Departments of Government of Kerala, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India, and in Indian Council of Forestry & Research. His assignments mainly focussed on integrating sustainable developmental activities while preserving the natural eco-systems for providing meaningful employment opportunities to the weaker sections of the society, especially women.

After assuming the charge of Secretary General, Dr Prabhu said that concerted efforts will be made to promote sericulture in India and other countries as an alternate source of rural avocation in developing countries using ISC as a platform.
