Bengaluru girl only Indian to get into MIT at UG level
Bengaluru: Kaveri Nadhamuni, a 17-year-old student from Bengaluru, is the only girl from India to get admission into an undergraduate course at the reputed Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, this year.
Speaking to DH, Kaveri said she got early admission into MIT for Computer Science and would be leaving for Boston this August. Kaveri, who did her schooling at The International School Bangalore (TISB), last week received a near-perfect 44 out of 45 in her 12th grade International Baccalaureate (IB) board exam.
She says a strong and consistent academic performance played a key role in getting accepted by the top institute.
Through her ‘InData’, a website (http://indata.in/), she analysed government education data sets of millions of students across the country to study the impact of social factors like gender, parental education and medium of instruction, on their academic performance.
She has also interned at the CIDAR synthetic biology lab at Boston University. “I developed a machine learning tool, under my professor’s guidance, that uses Bayesian model merging algorithms to predict the success of input genetic circuits. The lab is now applying for a patent for the project,” she said.
Kaveri’s father Srikanth Nadhamuni said Kaveri had an analytical mind and her interest in Data Science made her take up real-world projects, also helping her to get into the MIT. She has been learning Carnatic music from her grandmother, since the age of 4. Even as a large number of Indian students try to get admission into top universities like MIT, Harvard, Stanford and the Oxford, there are also legitimate concerns after the Trump administration tightened H-1B visa rules.
