Bengaluru: The chief justice of the high court of Karnataka has, in an order dated June 1.2015, appointed judge J M Cunha (also referred to as J M D’Cunha) the registrar general of the said court with immediate effect.
He replaces B A Patil who has been transferred to the position of registrar (vigilance) of the high court. In effect, it is the switching of positions for the two judicial officers.
Judge Cunha, who hails from Kaikamba near Mangaluru, had attracted nationwide attention with his landmark judgement in September 2014, which held Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa guilty of amassing assets disproportionate to known sources of her income during 1991-96.
He had pronounced the order while presiding over a special court set up in the central prison at Parappana Agrahara in the southern suburb of the city.
A single-judge bench of the state high court has since acquitted Jayalalithaa in the case, which eventually paved the way for her taking over the reins of the TN government again a few days ago.
The state cabinet on Monday, June 1 has decided to go in appeal in the apex court against the acquittal, since the state had been made a party in the case.
