Bengaluru: Supreme Court’s Former Judge Justice K Jagannatha Shetty (78) No More

Bengaluru: Justice Kalmanje Jagannatha Shetty, former judge of the supreme court of India, passed away at his residence in V block in Rajajinagar here on Tuesday, Apr 7. He was 78.

He is survived by wife and two daughters.

He was born in Ambalapady, Udupi on December 15, 1926. After early education in Udupi and graduation from St Aloysius College in Mangaluru, he studied at in the Osmania University.

Enrolling as a lawyer in July 1954 and advocate in the high court in Hyderabad in 1955, he practised up to 1956. He also obtained a Master’s degree in Law during this period. After the reorganization of states in 1956, he moved his base to the then-Mysuru high court in Bengaluru.

Having acquired extensive practice in all branches of Law and, in particular, Civil, Service and Constitutional matters, he served as part-time professor of Law in the Government Law College, Bangalore for about 10 years. For some more years, he taught post-graduate students too. He was a member of Mysuru State Bar Council for two years.

He was appointed a judge of the state’s high court in June 25, 1970. He had served as acting chief justice of the court from October 24, 1985 to August 27, 1986. On October 1, 1986, he was appointed as the chief justice of the Allahabad high court. On May 1, 1987, he was appointed a Judge of the supreme court of India.

He retired on December 14, 1991.

My heartfelt condolences to Hemakka, Parineeta, and Babitha on the loss of dear husband to Hemakka, loving and caring father to Parineeta And Babitha and adoring grandpa to his grandchildren. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time. Justice Jagannathanna lived a simple life after his retirement from the Supreme Court shying away from all the glamour that is normally associated with past retirees.
