Bengaluru: Mohammed Hamdan, a one-year-old boy from Karachi in Pakistan successfully underwent an open-heart surgery for ventricular septal defect, VSD in short, at the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Studies and Research here last week.

He was suffering from Large Heart Defect by birth called Ventricular Septal Defect. His father has small-time office job in Karachi. The baby had recurrent cough, fever and sweating, besides regular feeding difficulties and not gaining weight.

Paediatricians and cardiologists had examined him in many hospitals at Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad and they recommended early open-heart surgery.

However, the parents were told that it was very difficult to operate on such a small child because of its high risk potential and limited expertise available in those hospitals.

The parents started searching for good heart hospitals in India on the Internet. Ultimately they decided to get baby operated at Jayadeva Institute, based on its profile of quality treatment at an affordable cost.

According to Dr C N Manjunath, director, a month back they had sent all the medical records by e-mail which was reviewed and it was decided to call the baby for surgery.

A team headed by Prof P S Seetaram Bhat, Dr Girish Gowda, Dr Parimala Prasanna Simha and Dr Jayaranganath operated on the child a week ago. Now the child has fully recovered. Incidentally, as the child was completing a year, the parents celebrated the child’s birthday in the hospital. It was scheduled to be discharged in a few days.

This heart defect, if operated within appropriate time, could be cured and a normal life-span would be ensured, said Dr C N Manjunath.

A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a type of congenital heart defect in which there is an abnormal opening in the dividing wall between the main pumping chambers of the heart (the ventricles).
