Madrid, June 1 (IANS) Rafael Benitez is set to be named the new coach of Real Madrid some time this week.
The Spaniard coached his last game for Napoli on Sunday and on Monday was filmed leaving Naples for Madrid in a private jet, reports Xinhua.
When asked how he felt, the former Valencia, Liverpool and Chelsea coach, who began his career with the Real youth system, commented he was “excited and happy,” before adding that his contract with the Spanish club had not yet been signed.
“We still have some things to talk about,” said Benitez, who nevertheless found it hard to hide his happiness at being given one of the most important jobs in football. He was asked if his dream began now and gave a one word answer — “yes”.
The contract negotiations are expected to be relatively straightforward and if all goes according to plan Benitez could be officially presented by the club as soon as Wednesday lunchtime.
Meanwhile Paul Clement, who was the assistant coach to sacked Real manager Carlo Ancelotti, has been named the new coach of English Championship side Derby County.
