Paris, July 2 (IANS) The French Football Federation (FFF) has announced that it has extended for two more years its contract with Philippe Bergeroo as coach of the women’s national team.

Bergeroo, who led the women’s side to the World Cup quarter-finals in Canada in June, will thus be in charge for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and Euro 2017 in the Netherlands, Xinhua reported on Wednesday.

The 61-year-old, a member of the men’s squad that won the Euro 1984 title, met FFF president Noel le Graet on Wednesday to discus the future and review the World Cup where his side lost to Germany 4-5 in penalty shootout after finishing their quarter-final match 1-1 in regular time.

“I am satisfied with the work done by Philippe Bergeroo since I appointed him in August, 2013,” said Le Graet. “The team has made rapid progress under his reign and is ranked the third in the FIFA rankings.”

“He also got a good result from the World Cup in Canada and took the team qualified for Rio 2016, which was one of our main objectives,” added the boss.

“I want to continue to advance with the team and to prepare for the future,” commented Bergeroo. “I’m very thankful for the president’s confidence on me.”
