Bishop Gerald Highlights Role of Teachers in Creating Healthy Society During Teachers’ Day celebrations

Udupi: “The responsibility lies with the teachers in maintaining equality in every aspect in instilling character of students to create a healthy society”, said bishop Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo of Udupi diocese.

Bishop Lobo was speaking during the Teachers’ Day celebrations organized by the Udupi diocesan Catholic Education Society® at Don Bosco Hall here, on Tuesday September 4.

Bishop Lobo further said, “Teachers have enjoyed higher status than parents in Indian culture. Teachers have a greater role in shaping future citizens. Meanwhile, in the changing times, teaching has become a mere profession. Teachers are the essence of nation-building. No development takes place without a teacher in every sphere. The late Indian President Sarvapalli Radhakrishna is a testimony to prove that a teacher can become the President of India. Lack of quality teachers highlights the existing situation in the quality of education in our country”, added Bishop.

“A teacher is no more immune to social changes. Politics, trade and casteism pose hindrances to teachers in discharging their duties. It further makes it difficult for the common man to delve into the complexes of society. The students also fail to understand the significance of Teachers’ Day celebrations”, said Bishop.

The deputy director of Udupi district public instructions Sheshashayana Karinja, said that it is our foremost virtue to respect teachers. The Teachers’ Day celebrations should not be limited to one-day, teachers too ought to introspect themselves whether they have done justice to their profession. Teachers should love their students and shape them into responsible future citizens.

Teachers, lecturers and staff of schools and colleges under the Catholic Education Society who retired from the last academic year were felicitated along with students and schools that secured 100 percent results.

Udupi parish priest Fr Valerian Mendonca welcomed the gathering. Catholic Education Society secretary Dr Lawrence D’Souza delivered the vote of thanks. Vinay and Helen Cornelio compered the programme.
