BJP Mahila Morcha Celebrates SC Verdict on Triple Talaq
Udupi: The Supreme Court verdict on triple talaq was celebrated by the Udupi District Women’s Cell of the Bharatiya Janata Party here at the Clock Tower on August 24.
The BJP women’s cell office bearers celebrated the Supreme Court verdict by distributing sweets.
Speaking on the occasion Sheela K Shetty, vice president of Udupi Zilla panchayat said that the judgment has liberated the Muslim women from suppression which was going on for more than a thousand years. It is now time for the country to have a common law for all religious denominations, lest social evils like the triple talaq would go unquestioned. Traditions like the Triple Talaq are similar to mental and social harassment of our Muslim sisters and daughters and are an impediment to the progress of modern Indian society. The majority verdict of the five-judge Constitution bench declaring the practice of triple talaq among Muslims as “unconstitutional”, would give Muslim women the right to lead a dignified life, she added.
BJP Women leaders Nayana Ganesh, Geethanjali Suvarna, Shyamala Kundar, Veena Shetty, Rashmitha Balakrishna Shetty, Geetha Shet, Aseema Bhanu, Zareena Bhanu and others were present.
