BJP and TJAVHS workers arrested for observing black day against Tipu Jayanti
Udupi: Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Tippu Jayanti Acharane Virodhi Horata Samithi were arrested by the police for observing Black Day against the state-sponsored celebrations of Tipu Jayanti.
Some of the BJP workers gathered at the Taluk Office and shouted slogans against Tipu Sultan and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The police arrested all the protesters and later released them at the Chandu Maidan.
BJP district president Mattar Rathnakar Hegde, Secretary Suresh Nayak, Fish Federation president Yaspal Suvarna, BJP Youth wing president Akshith Shetty Herga, Uday Kumar Shetty and others were present.
Meanwhile, Tippu Jayanti Acharane Virodhi Horata Samithi members gathered at the Clock Tower near Service bus stand and shouted slogans against Tipu Sultan and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. They were also arrested by the police and released at the Chandu Maidan.
In the wake of opposition against Tipu Jayanti, the district administration had clamped prohibitory orders (Section 144) across the district from 6:00 am on Wednesday, November 9 to 6 am on Friday (November 11) to maintain peace in the district.
Excluding government programmes, the district administration has banned processions, protests, rallies, public programmes, and political meetings. Assembly of more than five persons is banned during the period.
