Building Waste Dumped into MCC Drainage- an Act of Ignorance by Ex-MUDA Chairman

Mangaluru: Coming out of Indra Bhavan restaurant-near Balmatta/Arya Samaj after having my favorite Goli Baje and Kerang (sweet Potato)Podi, I noticed a huge pile of building waste being dumped into the recently constructed drainage by MCC. I thought to myself who would do such an ignorant job dumping building waste materials into a drain that would block the flow of water, creating an overflow during the rains. Could it be some uneducated people might have done that act – but surely not an educated and responsible citizen of Mangaluru will ever do such a thing- but I was totally wrong.

In the meantime, I witnessed a laborer carrying a basketful of building waste from a building (at the entrance of Balmatta/Arya Samaj road) which is getting a facelift- and approached the worker and asked him who directed him to dump the waste into the drainage. Pointing his finger at a person standing near to the building which is getting renovated (in fact the building belongs to this person) the laborer said-“O aadmi udhar hum ko bol diya” (That person over there told me to do so)- I was surprised to hear that, for the fact, the person who had directed this poor innocent laborer to dump the waste into the MCC drainage happens to be the Ex-chairman of the Mangalore Urban Development Authority?

Can you believe a person who was head of development and infrastructure projects of the City, is himself illegally destroying the beauty and development of the city through his act of ignorance by making a worker dump waste into a newly constructed drainage? This person is not only the Ex-chairman of MUDA, but has also being a former Mangalore University Syndicate Member; and also former Trustee of NMPT. I have known this person for many (not personally though) years and had great respect towards him for his active involvement in various projects and programmes in the community. But myself being a strong supporter of Congress party (even though I have no voting rights) I had always admired the qualities and power of this dynamic and energetic person.

  1. But unfortunately, I couldn’t even believe that a responsible person of such calibre and popularity in town would do such a thing which not only spoils his reputation but also the image of the party which is ruling the State, and the MCC. While certain organizations like Ramakrishna Mission and many other social organizations are trying hard to keep our Kudla clean under PM Modi’s Swachh Bharath campaign- but on the other hand, we have some leaders who abuse the cleanliness campaign and go against it. Seems like they don’t practice what they preach- sending a wrong message to the people to follow them in a wrong direction.

My humble request to this responsible citizen of Mangaluru, who was also the ex-MUDA chairman to take quick action in cleaning up all the mess, before it gets much worse (others too will dump more garbage/waste in the same spot if it is left for a while) and adhere to the rules and regulations of Clean Mangaluru. Yes, we all make mistakes- but we also learn from our mistakes. May be it was an act done unknowingly or could be done intentionally- whatever could be the reason, as they say, “Better late than never”- the mess created by dumping building waste in the drainage could be cleaned immediately-thereby rectify the “Act of Ignorance” and for the betterment of the community. Thanking you Sir, in anticipation and looking forward to your quick response in rectifying this issue.

1) Alfie has exposed some one powerful. But did he ask him a question to check if he had indeed ordered dumping like how it was being done? 2) Alfie has confessed his political leanings. That is his personal thing. However I see a sense of defensive and protective mechanism here. You do not have to fear the political clout of any person Alfie. You are more powerful as a citizen and journalist. Whichever party you support is your democratic choice. I guess there is a lesson for all of us ‘kudla’ people here. We tend to hesitate when we… Read more »
