Byndoor – Gangebailu Villagers oppose move to relocate liquor shop in Residential Area
Udupi: A group of residents from Gangebailu of Byndoor have appealed to the district administration not to open a Liquor outlet in their village wherein people from different communities are living amicably so far.
In a petition submitted to the Deputy Commissioner Udupi district and Commissioner Excise Department on Saturday, July 1, it is stated, “After the Supreme Court banned liquor sale within 250 meters of national and state highways the excise department is planning to relocate liquor shops in Gangebailu residential area. The officials have proposed to open a shop near the Temple and Garodi area in gross violation of the norms prescribed for opening liquor shops. The norms are clear that no shop should be located near educational institutions, places of worship and in residential areas”. If the liquor shop will be opened in the village customers, under the influence of alcohol, would harm the local public.
The shop, if opened would pose serious problems to the people of Koderi, Hosahithlu, Gangebailu, Gandhinagar and create law and order problems. As women from these villages use the road frequently where the shop is going to come up, the authorities should not set up the shop there, they added.
More than 200 villagers of Gangebalilu were present while submitting the memorandum to the deputy commissioner and Excise commissioner.
