Capitanio School Students get Road Safety Tips from ASI and a Senior Citizen
Capitanio School Students get Road Safety Tips from ASI Nagesh Bangera of Mnagaluru Traffic South Police station-Kankanady, Mangaluru; and also from Senior Citizen, Joe D’souza- a retired NRI Engineer from USA, and also a Humanitarian and a Handy-Man for various traffic police stations in City.
Mangaluru: It’s nice to note that as part of the Traffic Management and Road Safety Week {RSW} which started from 1 July and culminates on 31 July 2018, the Traffic Police have already started doing a marvelous job in bringing road safety awareness among the motorists and pedestrians – and also they have been strict with those who violated the Traffic rules and regulations. Two-wheeler riders have been the target of the traffic cops during this week. The fear of being caught for not wearing a helmet has almost dissipated among two wheeler riders in the city. However, the city traffic police are back on their feet to pull the leash once again on erring riders, and many riders were slapped with fines for not wearing helmet, including the pillion riders.
However, the traffic police are trying to revive their efforts once again during the RSW. Each area was given a mandate for the week to promote awareness – and some of them had interesting ideas for the safety of motorists. During this Road Safety Week several programmes are focused on inculcating road safety values in vehicle owners, as well as school children. Since majority of the accidents are caused by two-wheelers which constitute 78 per cent of all vehicles registered in Karnataka, the cops are trying to bring awareness on safe riding among the riders. Yesterday, the cops have cracked down on illegal parking by locking the wheels and slapping a fine of Rs 300 on each violators. This will bring a change in their road safety behaviour.
Objectives and the aim of celebrating the campaign road safety week is to promote the road safety measures in the community, schools, colleges, work places, on roads and etc; To decrease and completely remove out the road accidents, road accident death and injury cases by applying the road safety measures; To encourage all the travelers to follow the traffic rules and wear helmets and seat belts while driving; To implement the new preventative measures which are proved to lessen the risk of road accidents, death or injury; To aware the people about the speed limit of the vehicles to prevent road accidents; To maintain the speed and required distance from other vehicles; and To aware people that do not drink, do not drive when tired and do not use phones or radios while driving.
As part of this Road Safety Campaign by the Mangaluru South Police Department, a talk on Road Safety Measures was organized at Capitanio High School-Mangaluru on Tuesday, 10 July 2018. ASI Nagesh Bangera welcoming the gathering said, ” Even though we try our best efforts to provide safety for children and also adults, it should also be the duty of the children and adults to follow the traffic rules and regulations. Children should watch for moving vehicles while crossing the road. Your school is located on a busy National Highway, so you should take extra caution and watch out for moving vehicles. And if you see any rash driving or someone breaking traffic rules, quickly click a photo on your mobile phones and send them to us, and we will take necessary action. Our DCP’s Uma Prashanth and Manjunath Shetty have taken stern steps in controlling rash drivers and riders, and has also directed us to take strict action against violators. “
” Two-wheeler riders riders think helmet is for fashion, they either carry it in their hands or place it on the two-wheeler. Wearing helmet saves life, so riders should wear helmet all the time, and not only when cops are present. Riders should not show-off riding zig-zag especially when during opening and closing hours of schools/colleges. We will watch for such riders and fine them with hefty fines. When many seniors spend their retired lives at home doing nothing, but here we have a energetic and young senior citizen of ONLY 74 years, who not only help our traffic police in various means, but puts in lots of his efforts in traffic control initiatives- and today we are glad to have him here to speak a few words on Road Safety-may I present to you Joe D’souza Sir, a good friend of our department , a humanitarian and social worker” added ASI Nagesh.
Addressing the students, Joe D’souza said, ” Just like you students, I too was a student, but during our school days we followed strict traffic rules, and always walked to school in a safe manner. But sadly, in the present generation I see young students fooling around while walking on the road or busy chatting or browsing internet on their smart phones, thereby ignoring moving vehicles. This is dangerous and a safety hazard. You need to be alert while walking or crossing the roads, and your school being on a busy Highway, you need to be more careful. Obeying traffic rules and following safety measures, you will be safe. Respect the police, listen to your elders, and don’t be rude and go against them. You are the future generation, and India depends on you for Nation building. Don’t rush just because you are little late to school-your life is more important- watch for traffic and obey traffic rules”
“Unnecessary motorists honk horns here, which irritates others. The number of motorists honking that I have experienced in 47 years while in USA, but here in Mangaluru in just 47 minutes you can hear three times more honking? Motorists should stop honking unnecessarily, especially near institutions and hospitals. You children can also help the police department in making a difference-if you see someone breaking traffic rules, call the police at the number mention below, and if possible take photos and send it to the police station. I want to make a humble request to the school management to depute a guard near the school gate so that students can cross the road safely. I hope that you all as good students will obey traffic rules and regulations, and come to school and go home safely: added D’souza.
While complimenting DCP’s Uma Prashanth and Manjunath Shetty, who along with their respective departments are doing a fantastic job in cracking down on traffic rules violators, it would be nice if they do similar checks every day, and not only during RSW. Police action regularly can bring the noise pollution of this shrill horns down. Already each one is under terrible stress driving and riding and walking in Mangaluru roads. We hear frequent shrill or musical horns mostly from these private buses, and they also use it in silent zones and even midnight. Hearing those horns many have experienced severe heart beats due to sudden high decibel noise exposure. This already creates serious mental and physical disturbance on human population. So shrill horns should be totally banned and severe fines and punishment to be given to drivers who uses them. Also illegal parking should be cracked down.
Team Mangalorean extends heartfelt thanks the Traffic police, traffic wardens and home guards who work very hard to ease the traffic in the city. Safety is not just a programme, it is a way of life- you have all done a great job- keep up the good work that you are entrusted with- and continue doing your duties with dedication, commitment and honesty without any corruption, bribe, partiality, political influence etc. Glad to see you are all doing a great job during the Road Safety Week, make this ‘RSW 2018’-an example to follow all year long? Mangaluru Traffic Police awake ….arise! Bring peace to Mangalureans. I think “Road Safety Week” should be observed every single week of the year, to control and bring down traffic violations in Kudla?
