Mangaluru: Addressing media persons during a press meet held at Mangaluru Press Club, Dr Rita Noronha director of CEDSE said “Centre for Development Studies and Education (CEDSE), a registered charitable trust, will launch its website on Care Child Cancer in a ceremony at School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya on November 14 at 10 am . District in-charge minister U T Khader will preside over the function, former MLA J R Lobo, MLC Ivan D Souza, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, Zilla panchayat CEO Dr Selvamani, MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazir, Police Commissioner T R Suresh, Principal of School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya Dr Juliet C J and Superintendent of Wenlock hospital Dr Rajeshwari Devi will be the chief guests.
She further said, “CEDSE (Regd.), a civil society organization, working with its vision of society where there is Justice, Wellness and Sustainable Development, has undertaken a number of services to address the needs and rights of people with focus on the marginalized sections of the society, especially women and children. Functioning as a resource centre to facilitate alternative education, organized action, replicable models of service and research, it has often collaborated with the government and other civil society institutions in such efforts”.
“Care Child Cancer service was initiated as a part of wellness promotion agenda of CEDSE in mid-2013, with the aim of saving precious lives of children from the life threatening disease of cancer. Along with regular follow-up to ensure cancer affected child’s compliance with the treatment cycles as advised by the doctors and giving financial support which is not available under the government schemes (i.e. costs incurred towards investigative procedures and medicines, travel from home to the hospital and back – from distant locations, out of pocket day today expenses during frequent hospital admissions and so forth), more than 100 cancer affected children and their caregivers belonging to the economically marginalized sections are provided psychological counselling. An equal number of children are also provided emotional support to handle the situation of crisis that emerges from the disease that affects a child in their family ” added Dr Rita Noronha.
Also speaking on the occasion, Herald Moras- Chief Coordinator, CEDSE CCC said, “This intervention has resulted in sustained reduction in discontinuity of treatment among the children from the below poverty line households, raising their survival rate to 72% at present – an indication that the service is not only effective to a major extent in fulfilling the objective. We wish to reach more child cancer patients by sustaining and expanding the existing service and further enhance its effectiveness by adding significant provisions such as nutritious food for the affected children to enhance their immunity to fight the disease, patient/family support during and after treatment and support for the families of indebted and impoverished deceased patients to rebuild their lives. Interventions to facilitate early detection, disease prevention and holistic health promotion are also incorporated in our agenda to address this painful malady much more effectively, so as to evolve a replicable model of service that has public policy implications to address such diseases”.
“We request various concerned organizations and institutions (government and private) engaged in health, development, education, human rights and media related work, people’s representatives and citizens to collaborate with us to take forward this service started with the motto Let Child Live, Not Cancer and welcome them to participate in the CEDSE CCC website launch programme on Wednesday, the 14th of November 2018″added Herald Moras.
Dr B Shatharam Baliga- Pediatrician, Wenlock Hospital, and Dr L Harshaprasad – Oncologist, MC-Mangaluru were also present during the press meet.
