Central Market Shifting to APMC Yard; CMMA Submits Memorandum to DC

Mangaluru: The sudden decision of shifting the fruit and vegetable market to Baikampady has put the Central Market Merchant Association in shock. The MLAs of Mangaluru South and North tried to convince the Merchants to temporarily shift the market to the APMC yard, Baikampady.

In this connection, the CMMA president along with other members approached the DC and handed over the memorandum on April 4.

Speaking to mangalorean.com President of CMMA Mustafa said, “The sudden decision of shifting the fruit and vegetable market to APMC yard, Baikampady by the district administration is not right. We visited the APMC yard on April 3 and were shocked to see the area. The area is a total mess without any basic facilities. The distance from Mangaluru to APMC is 17 km which is difficult for the traders to travel.”

Mustafa further said, “Today we met the DC as well as the DCP crime and traffic and explained the problems of the traders if the market is shifted to the APMC yard. We have submitted the memorandum with our demands. We have also requested to permit us to operate our business at the Central Market during the night from 11 pm to 4 am”.

Mustafa also said, “We have also mentioned the places where it will be convenient to temporarily shift the market. The suitable places are Nehru Maidan and Football ground, Service Bus stand, Karavali Utsav ground or a Private land in Jappinamogeru. If the district administration permits us to shift to one of these places it will also be convenient for people to buy fruits and vegetables. The APMC yard is not the right place and most of the traders have refused to move there. If the administration accepts our demands we can move there as soon as possible”.
