CESU Celebrates Teachers Day, Honours Retired Teachers

Udupi: The Catholic education Society of Udupi (CESU) Diocese organised the Teachers Day celebrations on Saturday, September 2 at the St Mary’s English Medium School, Kannarpady.

The programme began with a prayer dance by the teachers. Fr Valerian Mendonca Correspondent of St Mary’s English Medium School welcomed the gathering.

Pramod Madhwaraj minister for fisheries, Sport and youth affairs and also district minister in-charge felicitated the achievers teachers on the occasion.

In his message Pramod Madhwaraj said that teachers play a vital role in the achievements of students. Teachers mould students into good human beings. Teachers should teach students to lead life in good manners; they should fill students with human and social values apart from academics.

Teachers have played a vital role in the development of Udupi district. The Human Development Index indicates the effective growth of the rural sector. The least Infant Mortality Rate in the country is recorded in Udupi district,.

Udupi district has completed 20 years of inception, the district has stood first in PUC and SSLC examinations in the 2016-17 academic years. There is also the contribution of Catholic Education society behind the success of the education sector. The role of Christian Missionaries is commendable in strengthening the education, social and health sector.

While a politician or an official is retired, he becomes a retired official or a former politician, but when teachers are retired they are never called as retired teachers. They continue to remain as a teacher, which signifies their role in the society. Teachers should work towards shaping a student into an achiever and a good citizen. When a student achieves, not only his parents rejoice but also the teachers share the happiness of their effort in shaping the student to achieve in life.

The priests and teachers don’t get promotions very often but with the blessings of almighty and the people I have been promoted four times. I won elections for the first time which was the first elevation made by the people, the second elevation was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Revenue Minister, the third elevation was as Minister and fourth elevation as the Cabinet Minister, he added.

Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo along with the dignitaries on the dais honoured the retired and would be retiring teachers during the academic year right from the primary, higher primary, high school, PUC and college level by offering them shawl, fruit basket, flowers and memento. And also felicitated the heads of educational institutions which had registered 100 percent results in SSLC and PUC examinations held in March/April 2017.

Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo the Bishop of Udupi presided over the function. Vijayalaxmi B Nayak Deputy director Incharge, PU Board Udupi district, Fr. Lawrence D’Souza secretary Catholic Education Society Udupi Diocese were also present on the occasion.

Our retired Teachers need every possible attention and respect. Retired teachers while they are living will witness the glory and success of many of their past students and will be proud to inherit the mere thought that those successful people were their students of the past. Experts have proven that every child spends equal amount of time, or some times more time, with their teachers in schools than those students with their own parents.
