Mangaluru: The Kannada translation for the English word “Mini” is either “Kiru”, “Mari” or “Kiriya”- and that’s the word activists belonging to a newly formed organization called “Kannada Katte” are urging the State government to change the name of all Mini Vidhana Soudhas/Taluk Administration Complexes in the State to “Kiru Vidhana Soudhas”.
It is learnt that a memorandum from this organization has been forwarded to the newly elected Karnataka State Kannada Sahitya Parishat President, Manu Baligar. According to Kannada Katte President, Dr Annaiah Kulal who states that ” it is against the state government’s language policy to have English words on govt. sign boards. Since Kannada is the administration language in the state, then it is advisable that “Mini” word should be changed to either “Kiru”, “Mari” or “Kiriya” to abide with the state’s Kannada policy ,”.
It is also learnt that this “Kannada Katte” organization in Mangaluru of nearly 300 members, are also associated with Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, and they have already organized various campaigns to make Kannada official/compulsory in all State Govt. offices/complexes. Kannada Katte has members from various walks of life, including lawyers, teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs and many others in various professions.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed as to what would be the fate of “Mini” transforming itself into “Kiru” at all govt.complexes, including the present “Mini Vidhana Soudhas? So how about “Mini Bus”, “Mini Meals”, “Mini Hall”, “Mini Bar” ,”Mini Idli/Vada”, etc.. ‘Mari Bar’ could be pronounced by some as “Mary Bar” after few pegs?
