Chaos erupts at CMC Meeting over use of objectionable words

Udupi: Chaos erupted during the CMC meeting after opposition Councilor Yasphal Suvarna allegedly used objectionable words against the nominated councillor Janardhan Bhandarkar here on March 31.

 Yasphal Suvarna took a dig at the nominated councilor Janardhan Bhandarkar for interfering during the question answer hour on the issue of drinking water saying that the officials needed to answer. Heated arguments were witnessed between Yasphal and Janardhan, Yasphal allegedly directed Janardhan to sit down saying “Kullumbe”. Councilor Ramesh Kanchan said that Yaspal Suvarna used the word “Kullumbe” which is objectionable and is an insult made to Janardhan Bhandarkar. Ramesh Kanchan went further and said that the opposition councilors should be careful while addressing the house. As Ramesh Kanchan said “Jagrate” which means careful, irked the opposition leaders who urged the president to intervene. They even approached the chair and protested for allegedly misleading the house during the discussion on drinking water by using objectionable words.

Yaspal Suvarna urged the CMC Commissioner Manjunathayya saying “You have worked in the Education Department prior to your posting to CMC kindly say the meaning of the word “Kullumbe”. CMC Commissioner urged the councillors to settle down.

Ramesh Kanchan said that the opposition councillors are not in the position to understand the velocity of the drinking water issues, as they have skipped meetings called to discuss the drinking water issues. Other members echoed saying that the BJP councillors were concerned more on garnering publicity rather than working together to solve the problems.

CMC President Meenakshi Madhav Bannaje intervened and said that objectionable words should not be uttered in the house and pacified the opposition and the ruling councillors. The proceedings of the house which were halted due to the discussion on objectionable words used during the meeting resumed after the intervention of the CMC President.

Water supply officials said that in the present scenario 15 MLD water can be supplied once in two days till June 5. The rationing of water will continue to ensure better water supply. The hydrological survey has indicated that dredging is not feasible in the Baje Dam. The water source has been identified near Mani dam in the limits of Hiriyadka gram panchayat limits. The matter will be discussed with former Minister and Kaup Constituency MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake.

Prashanth Amin’s statement on dogs led the house to share some lighter moments. He said that CMC officials and President will only understand the agony of people affected by stray dogs if they themselves encounter the problems. He also said that the officials and the President should face the problem from the stray dogs.

A draft proposal on setting up waste management plant at a cost of 13 crores was presented in the house, the members said that the government should be approached for the sanction of funds as the CMC is not in the position of financing the project.

CMC Vice President Sandhya Tilak, CMC Opposition councillor Dr M R Pai, Standing Committee President Shobha Kakkunje and others were present.
