Chief Whip Ivan D’Souza Visits District Jail After Receiving Complaints

Mangaluru: “I have visited the District Sub Jail after getting complaints about lack of basic facilities and the shortage of staff. The number of prisoners in the District Sub jail is more than the capacity and there is news about fighting between inmates. To have first-hand information on the functioning of the district jail I thought of meeting the Jail Superintendent. To bring to the notice of the CM all the issues related to the district jail and solve them, I have met the Jail Superintendent”, said the Chief Whip Ivan D’Souza to mediapersons after visiting the District Sub Jail on July 20.

Addressing the mediapersons Ivan said, “I had met the Inspector General of Prisons, N S Megharik in Bengaluru and informed him about the problems in the district jail. The capacity of the jail is 218 but at present, there are 418 prisoners in the jail. If the jail is overcrowded, there will naturally be fights. Megharik said that he is aware of the problems. We are planning to shift the jail to Balepuni. We have identified the land and Rs 2 crore has been sanctioned to construct the retaining wall of the jail”.

Ivan further said, “Jails should be improved and there should be transparency. The jail manual should be followed for smooth operations. We need to appoint efficient staff for the jail. The Jail Superintendent has requested to appoint able officers who can handle the prisoners. I am going to Bengaluru on July 22, I will meet the CM and bring all the District jail issues to his notice”.

When asked about the lavish parties in the prison, Ivan said, “The Jail Superintendent said that the photos are not new and we are not aware of it. We serve non-veg to the prisoners once a week. Three persons in the photos are already released on bail. Even the Superintendent of the prison Krishnamurthy has been transferred. I will discuss this issue with the IG in Bengaluru.”

When asked about the phone Jammer Ivan said, “The superintendent said that the frequency of the Jammer is less since the locals in the area face problems. If the frequency is high the mobiles will not work.”
