Christmas Celebration for Differently-Abled and Prison Ministry Held in Mysore Diocese

Mysore: In a heartwarming display of faith and community spirit, the Mysore Diocesan Commissions for the Differently Abled and Prison Ministry India hosted a grand Christmas celebration at the Catholic Center Hall in Bannimantap, Mysore. The event, held on December 15, was marked by a sense of inclusivity, warmth, and a profound commitment to embracing and uplifting every member of the community, particularly focusing on those who are differently-abled.

The celebration commenced with a solemn Holy Mass, presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Bernard Moras, the Apostolic Administrator of the Mysore Diocese and Archbishop (Emeritus). The liturgy provided a spiritual foundation for the day, inviting all participants to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas—joy, love, and inclusiveness.

Following the Eucharistic celebration, a vibrant cultural program took center stage, showcasing the talents of differently-abled children from various prominent institutions including Mercy Convent, Srirampura; Montfort School; Sneha Kiran Spastic Society; and Spandana Special School. These young performers captivated the audience with their heartfelt renditions and spectacular presentations, receiving enthusiastic cheers and applause from the gathered attendees.

In a testament to the spirit of giving that characterizes the Christmas season, gifts were distributed to all 100 differently-abled children by Archbishop Bernard Moras. The festive atmosphere was further enriched by enchanting prayer dances and melodious Christmas carols performed by children from Divya Krupa, Vidya Jyoti School, and postulants from St. Anne’s Luzern. With parents and caretakers present from various institutes, the hall resonated with laughter, cheers, and the joyous sounds of celebration.

In his address, Archbishop Bernard Moras articulated the Catholic Church’s unwavering commitment to creating an inclusive environment for all children, irrespective of their abilities. Drawing upon the compassionate love exhibited by His Holiness Pope Francis towards differently-abled individuals, he emphasized the Church’s duty to ensure that all children feel welcomed, valued, and loved. The event marked a significant milestone as it was the first such large-scale Christmas celebration for differently-abled children within the Mysore Diocese, reflecting a growing awareness and dedication to inclusivity.

A highlight of the celebration was the presence of Chief Guest Ms. Esthelle D’Souza, Secretary of the Commission for the Differently Abled in the Karnataka Region, who shared her inspiring personal journey of raising her 23-year-old differently-abled son. She spoke passionately about the societal pressures she faced, including calls for abortion, but resolutely chose to embrace her child. Her poignant message resonated deeply with many in the audience, and she offered her unwavering support and encouragement to parents navigating similar journeys.

The event also recognized the commendable efforts of Brother Jayaprakash, the Superior General of DDS, who received accolades for his dedicated service in the Prison Ministry. Coordinators from various Prison Ministry Units, specifically those in Mysore, Nanjangud, K.R. Nagar, Chamarajanagar, and Madikeri, took the opportunity to present reports on their meaningful work within the prison demographic, highlighting the transformative impact of their initiatives.

This joyous celebration was made possible through the generous sponsorship of gifts from the faculty and staff of St. Joseph’s Nursing College alongside M/s Lunars Company, who served as key donors for the event. Their contributions ensured that the children experienced the joy of giving and receiving during this special time of year.

The program was artfully compered by Ms. Bernie Fernandes and Ms. Reena, while Mr. Nitin and his choir team provided soulful musical accompaniment. Fr. Thomas Baros welcomed everyone to the celebration, and Sr. Mable D’Silva, SCB, closed the event with a heartfelt vote of thanks.

As the event drew to a close, attendees were treated to a festive serving of cake, tea, and food, further fostering a sense of community and togetherness.

Prominent attendees included Monsignor Alfred Mendonsa (Vicar General), Fr. Joseph Marie (Coordinator of Diocesan Commissions), Fr. Sebastian (Financial Administrator), Fr. Abilash (Bishop’s Secretary), Fr. Thomas Baros (Secretary, Commission for the Differently Abled), and Dr. Michael Noronha (Diocesan Secretary, Prison Ministry India).

The Christmas celebration served not only as a festive occasion but also as a powerful reminder of the importance of faith, inclusivity, and the spirit of giving and joy that truly encapsulates this special season. Through such initiatives, the Mysore Diocese continues to pave the way towards a more inclusive and compassionate community, celebrating the unique gifts and contributions of all individuals.
