Church/School Compound Wall Collapses Killing a Labourer Working in Nearby Compound
Mangaluru : In recent days, we have heard or seen compound walls, retaining walls, old-home waIl, etc collapsing due to the heavy rains that had been pounding the Coastal city for the last few days. And due to the fury of incessant rains last night and continuing this morning, has resulted in a compound wall of a St Anthony’s Church/School in Kulur, Mangaluru coming crashing down this morning, Saturday 19 September. Sadly, due to this tragic incident, a low-wage worker who was engaged in the work at a nearby compound was buried under the debris and died on the spot.
The deceased has been identified as Umesh, aged 38, a resident of Neermarga, in the outskirts of Mangaluru, and earning his bread as a low-wage coolie worker. Sources reveal that while Umesh, along with two other workers were working near the school in the compound of Jagadish, a neighbour there, and all of a sudden the school wall came crashing down, burying Umesh under the heavy mud and rocks, and he died on the spot. Luckily two other workers who were helping in the work escaped without any injuries. It is learnt that due to heavy rains during the last couple of days might have made the wall to collapse.
The police and fire personnel who had quickly rushed to the scene and tried all kinds of rescue efforts, unfortunately could not pull out Umesh in time out of the debris, and save him. Kavoor police have registered a case, and are investigating the incident.
