City midfielder Navas keen to end goal drought

London, Dec 18 (IANS) Manchester City midfielder Jesus Navas believes he will end his 63-match goal drought sooner rather than later.

The Spain international has gone almost 15 months without a goal with his last strike coming in a Capital One Cup game against Sheffield Wednesday some 63 matches ago and his last English Premier League (EPL) goal was against Cardiff almost two years ago.

Though Jesus’ role in the team is to provide chances for others — and his stats and assists in this department are among the best in the league — Navas expects his barren run in front of goal to come to an end in the near future.

“The most important thing is to create chances. I’m sure I will score eventually. As I said, if I am able to keep creating chances and getting into the right positions, the goals will arrive at some point,” Jesus told his club’s website mcfc.co.uk on Friday.

Navas is expecting nothing less than a tough 90 minutes when City face Arsenal on Monday, but he says a victory is achievable.

“It´s going to be a tough one, but we know that in the Premier League every match is difficult. Obviously it´s going to be hard but to win the three points would be very important to keep us within the leading pack,” he said.

“It goes without saying that this is a very important game because we are up against a direct rival in the title race and we have to face it thinking that by working hard and playing as we know can we will have options to win.”

Currently City are third in the EPL standings with 32 points, behind Leicester City (35 points) and Arsenal (33).

“This league is very competitive and every team puts you to the test, but I think we are very well positioned — in every competition we are in so we will go there with confidence,” Navas said.

I think that it is very important to stay focused on Monday because all of Arsenal’s players have the capability to make the game hard — but the same applies to our squad. It should be a really good game and we are looking forward to it.”
