CM urges Modi to withdraw cattle trade rules

Bengaluru, (DHNS): Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the ban on sale and purchase of cattle for slaughter at animal markets.

In a letter on Friday, Siddaramaiah termed the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (Regulation of Livestock Market) Rules, 2017, of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, “unconstitutional” and said these would have a far-reaching negative impact on the country’s economy. Copies of the letter were released to journalists.

“The rules are not in accordance with Articles 249 and 250 of the Constitution. The Central government has interfered with a subject in the State List without the consent of state governments. The rules are against the provisions of Articles 301 and 302 of the Constitution of India that allow free trade,” he stated in the letter.

Siddaramaiah said the Centre did not take the states into confidence before introducing the rules. “Introducing rules on such an important matter without consulting states hits at the roots of federalism,” he noted.

Meat, the key source of protein for the poor, is consumed by people of all faiths, not just minorities and Dalits. The rules bring “unfair and unnecessary dietary restrictions”, he stated.

The chief minister said farmers would be “badly affected” as most of them would not be able to provide documents required to trade the cattle and other animals.

Why is India obsessed with COW now all of a sudden ? Weren’t there cows before, weren’t they worshiped before or weren’t they slaughtered prior to this ? Weren’t there cattle fairs at designated locations for centuries so that farmers trade their cattle at the end of harvest season and buy a new pair when rains arrive ? Because that was how much their use was, i.e. use them to aid in farm activities. Once the purpose was done, trade it off so that the family can save on what is spent on their fodder. As for cows the practice… Read more »

“Why is India obsessed with COW now all of a sudden ? ” – Lydia Lobo

Dear friend, Please read a book or two and you may learn more about history. The tension over cow slaughter and beef goes back centuries. Both Islamic invaders and Colonial powers had their own share of struggle in India in this area. For the record, I oppose all animal slaughter in the name of food, entertainment and religion.

It doesn’t require of me to read a book to understand the matter – its quite simple – earlier there were larger households with a shed full of bovine animals. But as the households split into nuclear families, there are more houses now but not even one cow with a family. This exactly has lead to the panic because earlier, out of thousands animals, aged were released to the market but now not even younger cows are available with a common man. As such, where will the aged come from for consumption ? Did any of you or your parents… Read more »

“It doesn’t require of me to read a book to understand the matter” says the person who earlier had declared Europe to be the birthplace of Christianity!! Sigh… Dear Lydia, I was responding to your earlier assertion that ‘cow’ issue is relatively new and never existed before. You were wrong and this has been going on for centuries. Now, you are changing the subject to ‘supply-demand’!! Well, ironically, we have an area of agreement here. On this forum, I have repeatedly highlighted how over-consumption of dairy products (in the name of ‘ksheera kraanti’) has resulted in a huge supply of… Read more »

Look, gentleman, its the Hindu society that requires milk based proteins because they depend on vegetarian diet which lacks adequate amount of proteins. The demand for Milk and milk based products to supplement this requirement made a push to produce dairy products. However, the industry did not cease to function, it continues and people do depend on dairies for milk. It wasn’t like that before, when people had cows in their own sheds, they did not have to buy milk nor was there any shortage of meat supply as I explained before. Did we hear of cow thefts when our… Read more »
